    Right o'

I'm going to jump straight in with the problems here -

This is the main issue The most annoying one is this; some times when my monitor (24" Dell, Rev A04) goes in to sleep mode (doesn't matter if I have turned it but left the comp on and 20 mins has passed, or I've left it on and 20 mins has passed), it won't wake up again upon jiggling the mouse, tapping keys etc. So, what I do is either turn it off (or leave it on, it's made no difference), swap to the other DVI port, turn it back on (if I've turned it off) and look at the screen, and it says "display in power save mode" (or words to that effect), so I swap it back to the original port, plug it back in and, sometimes, it displays what it's supposed to, some times I have to repeate the process, but eventually it gets back to displaying what it's supposed to, it doesn't always need to be back onto the original DVI port either.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? It doesn't matter if I'm on 32-bit or 64-bit vista, or what version of the drivers I'm using for my 8800GTX. It's the second monitor I've had as the power button broke on the original, but I'm pretty sure the problem existed on that screen as well, so I am assuming it's the gfx?

Problem number two, I keep getting BSOD's, usually driver_power_state_failure, when watching media, seem's to be restricted to WMP, which is my player of choice, I some how managed to solve this when I was on 32-bit, one day it just stopped doing it, but now on 64-bit it has resurfaced. And yes I know I could use VLC, but thats a work around not a fix. It does some times do another BSOD too, but I can't remember what it says for that one, hasn't happened in a while.

I'm on the latest drivers (as of yesterday) for the 8800gtx and the X-Fi Music, doesn't seem to have solved the issue. I'm thinking hardware related, even though it's giving a Driver related BSOD due to it cropping up on both versions of Vista?

What are your thoughts? Really interested to hear peoples opinions on this because I am flumoxed.:thumb:

EDIT: Just remembered about event viewer - I'm getting this for around the time of the BSOD today (looks like nero's on the fudge then)
So I'm uninstalling that atm, should I remove it from the registry? (I haven't done this for a while so would like a few instructions on how to do it if that's possible?)

I'd start with basic HW diagnostics.

Run memtest to check your RAM, something like seatools for your HDD, stress prime 2004 (orthos id dual core) for your cpu.

It kinda sounds like a power issue - What make/model/age PSU do you have?

I agree with Golygus 100%. But I used to have a similar screen issue before and it turned out to Hibernate/Standby stuff.
    Try turning off Hibernate and Standby. If that doesnt solve the problem. Try looking in your bios for a sleep mode type thing and turn that off (Windows will still be able to control it). If that doesn't help, try looking around in your monitor's manual and/or just play with the controls and see what you can find relating to the power save mode. Otherwise, listen to Golygus. ^^;

I've done all the hardware diagnostics, everything is checking out ok so thats a good thing.

I'll try the hibernate options tonight and see wha happens. Frustratingly it doesn't happen all the time so catching it might be a bugger lol

i would contact BFG, just to make sure its not that, i had my old one rma'd from US in days, and a free upgrade brilliant.
i assume its not the dodgy striker, what bios are u using, 1305 is still better for me that the latest one!

i would bet on the striker, mine has done dodgy things in hybinate before, i have it disabled. check out u graphics first, bfg are far more accomodating than the total lack of support from asus . and rma'd asus boards are usually dodgy repaired ones often worse than the original.

ps when was the last time u did a clean vista install, it could just be a bit screwed?

Ah I thought you might drop in Dime :)

I'll have a word with BFG today if I get the chance, I hope it's not the striker, that thing has got to be the biggest headache. I'm on 1305, I updated about a month ago I think, when I also did a full clean install (I low level formatted the drive to get rid or any previous installs by plugging it in to another rig and using the WD utility).

Do you know how long the Striker Warranty is btw?

And as for hibernate, I don't use it myself, I use sleep or power it off completely, the monitor sleeps on it's own. When I find out a bit more from BFG I'll report back. I checked the event viewer as well the other night, it's got nothing logged for when this happens.

Right then, I've been onto scan, and the tech guys are pretty much as stumped as I am, I've done everything they have suggested, but, following the addition of a new problem (some times when coming out of sleep the USB peripherals (ie the mouse and keyboard in my case) do not get recognised, so we're thinking it's the mobo.

The good news is I was assure that Scan will take care of the RMA, we'll see how it goes, but as ever, very impressed with scan.

So I think I'm going to go for that option, RMA the mobo, it'll give me a good chance to clean the other hardware that's in there anyway I guess, but what a pain in the ass!
