So my BT infinity modem has died. No lights, nuffink. Change of PSU doesn't fix it. BT support have escalated to tier 2 bit earliest they can call back is Thursday... Any way to speed this process up? I just need a new box or an engineer to bring me a new box. I don't need the line checked. We has a minor power blip. All the main gear is backed up behind my UPS but like a fool the BT gear is unprotected in a different room. Ta
Doesn't help that the SMS service BT use for communication won't let me send texts to it. Why oh why did I ever go back to BT. I damn well knew what muppets they were!
buy yourself a cheapish router to get it back up and running again, then when you get a response from bt, tell them you just need a new router, as you have tried an alternate. or buy yourself a more expensive better router and just use that. you don't need a password for bt's home broadband, just a bt email address.
Is your broadband a fibre set up? I only ask as i'm not sure what the details are for that. If your using their ADSL broadband below are the details to set it up with a different router. If you have BT Broadband but want to use your own router (i.e. a third party model not supplied by BT) then you will need to configure the hardware settings manually. Refer to the manufacturers instructions for guidance on how to access the configuration settings on the router, then use the following values to configure the router for BT Broadband: Network ID, Username, PPP Username, Login or Login Username: broadband.user@btbroadband.com [note 1] Password: None required [note 2] Encapsulation: PPPoA or PPPoATM Multiplexing: VC-based or VC Mux VPI: 0 (zero) VCI: 38 Authentication: CHAP Modulation: G.DMT DNS: auto Note 1: Your router uses a BT Broadband username to connect to the broadband service. This username may be anything@btbroadband.com, anything@btinternet.com or anything@hgxx.btinternet.com. This username allows you to connect to BT Broadband. It should not be confused with your email address and password which are separate. Note 2: The BT Broadband network does not need a password, however some routers do insist a password is entered. If a password is required we recommend you enter 'password', and confirm as required. Some of the terminolology shown may vary from the above depending on the make of router you are using: sometimes the encapsulation and the encapsulation protocol may appear as one setting together (usually described as PPPoA VC based).
I would grab your self another BT OR Modem off the bay. Not only will you then have a spare once BT replace it but you can then unlock one and flashed improved firmware on it which can increase the line sync.
I think Guinevere means the Modem part of the fibre connection is at fault. As far as I am aware you cannot access this to flash it. If its just the router then any old cable router will do. I'm using a Netgear WNR834B v2 running DD-WRT and it runs perfectly.
I am indeed refering to the BT OpenReach Fiber Modem. Yes you can flash these. And it's worth doing. My line should be 54mbps. I'm running 61mbps.
Combination of using: New MKII BT VDSL Faceplate (Reduces noise on the line) 15cm Shielded RJ11 Cable Unlocked BT OR Modem with Firmware designed for longer distance telephone runs. Tweaking BT OR settings such as QoS and turning off various functions. Also with it being unlocked you can telnet to it for stats. I have a perl script which pulls the line stats every 5mins via Cacti and graphs it,
I gamed their service by starting a real time web chat and then getting them to call me and forward my call to the next tier. Arranged for an engineer call out on Wed.... Which isn't too bad I suppose. Yes, all infinity and it's the modem that's at fault. I'm not using the home hub (coz it's crap) and have a couple of apple airport extremes for that duty. I did a quick google on alternatives to using the BT modem and am I right that it's going to cost £200 to get something decent?
Whilst i'm not the best person to ask, seeing as I don't even have a BT line [I have choice of VM or no internet], but i was under the impression you *had* to use the BT one for their 'infinity' service [to the point you had to leave the modem behind if you moved]
no you can use any vdsl 2 annex a modem, so long as you have a username(usually your @btinternet.com email address) it would be different for FTTP(fibre to the premises) which uses a fibre media converter

Other wise the Cab will push out an update which overrides. P.S If you want to graph it just give me a shout.
