*Mods - Not sure if this is General or Tech as I'm just curious of a General Opinion*

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has signed up for BT Infinity, and if so could give their opinion?

The flat I'm moving into is due to receive Infinity this month, and our only other options is ASDL, but I'm tempted to wait it out for Infinity.

The big question is speed throttling? And if the speeds are close to advertised?

    Always value a BT'ers opinion!

    Cheers for any help! :thumb:

We have clients on it at work

    2 things to remember:

Their tech support is so hard to get hold of, 20 min holds before you get connected

No one seems to understand the company, we were told 5 static ips were the same price as 1 by 2 different people, called back the next day to order them and they had suddenly increased in price (yes only £5 but we would like to be informed when we call to ask, not when we order)

Not too fussed about a static IP at this point in time.

Annoying about Tech Support, but that wouldn't be a reason for me to through a good speed connection away.

Firstly Infinity is the BT retial product, the FTTC service made avalaible by OR has many re-selliers of it not just BT.

    https://spreadsheets0.google.com/pu...UzdHl4RGRZcnE1WWw0SVlLcVlzQWZuVFE&output=html

Spreadsheet of all the current re-sellers of the product.

As for speed, the BT checkers will underestimate the speed you will likely see, BT's wholesale checker is the most accurate if you can get FTTC.
Distance from the cab will determine the speed- about 600 meters at current is the furthest that 40/10 will reach before it starts to drop.
Their is the upgrade to 80/20 soon which will extend the distance that 40/10 can be achieved, is on trial atm with most isp's customers before it goes to retail.

Speed throttling on BT is applied to p2p, along with other isp's sky's FTTC product will soon be avalaible.

Given how little extra it costs over standard ADSL it is worth a punt, but only if:

    1. You cannot get cable (some areas Virgin is mince though, so it depends)
    2. The speed you would get the ADSL2+ is mince (ie if you would get 20Mbps on ADSL+ you may not actually require more)

It's fantastic if you can't get cable! In my area could only get up to 2Mbps because of the BT line we have and the distance from the exchange, cable isn't available either. Download speeds were at best around 500Kb/s.

With Infinity can download at 4-5MB/s from Steam, just ran a Speedtest and the result was 20ms ping, 36.58Mb/s so for me it was a massive improvement. I am also just over 2 miles from the exchange.

In contrast to what is said in the above post, I haven't noticed any throttling on P2P although there might be. Also there is a fair usage limit of 100GB pm and I have been notified of this on 1 previous occasion, they will limit speed during peak time if you continually go over.

Not sure of price compared to the top end cable providers as we can't get it round here but I would recommend Infinity from my experience.

    Big fat yes.

Had it for nearly a year now. Steady 37mb/s, and not had one issue with it.

Only neg is*most* torrents are throttled in peak times.

I'm looking at Infinity as well, with my area date set as the 31st March.

Currently with BE (and have been for 5 years now), but their service is slowly going downhill - DNS errors, the recent problem with Akami bandwidth and 2 days ago a total core network failure. They're being incredibly slow in offering their own FTTC (a trial in Barking is not launch), with rumours putting it to a 2013 date, which is just poor.

Throw in my current 8.7Mbit line speed and I want more.

I got a letter through the door this morning letting us know that our cabinet has been upgraded and that we can now make use of FTTC enabled broadband services from BT and other supporting providers.

Definitely going to have a big think about it... may check if I can get my Plusnet account upgraded to FTTC at a low cost, if it costs too much I'll go with BT because it'll be free setup and isn't too expensive.
It'll definitely be a massive improvement from the 2.5MB speed we're getting on our shoddy phone line.

I'd go with FTTC but from a better provider than BT (AAISP is amazing)

Migration from LLU before end of contract can be near impossible, and also damned expensive. That's how they often get their cash back from offering cheaper services. Worst I have seen for just migrating from LLU out of contract was £130.

We got fttc and since we were some of the first in our area to get connected to the cabinet, we pretty much always get ~30mbps (us that the right unit).

I guess AAISP just rock then - I migrated from their BE service to FTTC (getting installed tomorrow) with minimal charges - yay for 1month rolling contracts.

AAISP have a really odd calculator on their broadband prices page: http://aaisp.net.uk/broadband-prices.html

Based on the odd way that page calculates packages, the 80GB allowance during peak-time will cost £150.90 a month?

Yes, worth it. We're on 38.5mb/s here. As for throttling - it's protocol based, run anything through SSL and you'll be fine..

Going from 850kbps ADSL to 33Mb/s Infinity was ASTOUNDING!

    Totally worth it.
