Has anyone tried BT's Satellite ADSL? Is it any good? It may be my only alternative with no standard ADSL/cable in my area and no definite time when it will arrive.
Im not 100% sure but I think satellite is only downstream so you still need your isdn or modem to request packets i.e upload to ftp site, web addresses . So if you want 24/7 hr connection you will have to pay for an isp to keep the upstream open which you pay on top of the satellite connection. If I'm wrong someone will correct me.
That is the case with all satellite internet systems EXCEPT the BT one (www.btinternet.com/satellite2).
Well it seems for once BT have improved on an idea, but if the service is like normal broadband then they need to sort that out. http://www.btopenworld.com/satellite/faqs.html for anyones reference.
£649.00 + £250 = £899.00 I'd consider moving for that.... Talking of moving, I think this would be better in the network and comms forums...
sat internet still basiclly is a dial up net cept faster and more expensive ( thats how it is down under ) u still need a phone line as well as the sat i think u download through the sat and upload through he phone line ne way its bollocks just go cable or adsl
BT OpenWorld Satellite does not use your phone line for uploads, it uses the satellite dish. 512kb/s downstream and 150kb/s upstream.
yeah...the older generation satellite used ur phone line for uploads and sat dish for downloads (I seem to remember Sky TV offering this) the new generation of satellite (which is currently only on trial by BT and a handful of other operators around the UK) uses satellite for both upload and download and can get speeds of up to something like 30Mbps if i remember rightly.
