Yeah I've actually been hoping for a VERY long time that I could afford a trip around the Europe and been wondering who I could see and who's couch I could crash, when I finally understood that heck, most of us have been on this forum for years, plenty of us have come to known each other at some level (I know I'd much rather offer a bed for someone who's from the same forum rather than a random bloke), so why not crash each others sofas? After all, many of the forum users are young men looking for a trip to somewhere in the world?

Does anyone think there could be any use for this? I mean there are plenty of places where you can stay at some peoples' place, but over here you could be sure there's an internet connection and someone to talk tech with?

Feedback? Coming to Tampere (FIN)? Drop me a message!

A great idea - but I'd want to know someone vaguely well before I let them into my home. It's nothing personal, but I've seen some people I've met online, who appeared normal, turn VERY strange, VERY quickly.

Yeah I suppose it can be frightning, but from what I know lots of use are students/very barely have anything worth stealing anyway, so why bother worrying too much? I know I've invited plenty of people over at my house after just meeting them, so I'm not too scared...

While I applaud your effort, I think Suomi is very different than most places in the culture of couch hopping and hitchhiking. It's done a lot more commonly, and the general population seem to be much more trusting and accepting of that sort of thing.

I think you'd have trouble convincing Brits or Germans to take part, although you may find a few. I certainly hope you do. Hyvä onni to you regardless!

When you come home one night to find no less than 11 people (iirc 5 of them were the ska band Lightyear lol) spread around your living room, kitchen and anywhere else they can find a spot in a small flat then you're open to anything :D

I'd love to do this but it may be a few years off yet before I can afford to but I'm open for anyone heading this way though.

It's a good base concept but if something like this was to be organised it would need to be done properly with some kind of system to reduce risks, it's rare but things can turn south when you've got someone crashing at another person's place.

I'm somewhat open to the idea as I've lived in shared accommodation for a fair bit while at University and am used to living with strangers. Couldn't offer my current place though as I don't live alone (still sharing), when I eventually move into a new place of my own I'd probably be up for the idea of allowing people to crash for a week or two.

I suppose it could be done in a similar way to the new idea of the Marketplace's feedback topics; people may be more open to the idea if they see good feedback about a visitor who's looking to crash somewhere or on the flip-side good feedback about someone as a host.

Obviously people should have decent contents insurance which includes theft and damage, even if you don't have people staying with you this should be something you always have.

This is an interesting idea but I think I would be a bit concerned about a complete stranger staying in my house.

I have people crash round mine for convenience all the time because I live in a clubbing town but they are usually friends of friends and it's usually only for 1 night.

We tend to have guests here quite frequently, but there has been one guest, they are perma banned from this and any other house i live it.. Preferably the whole city if I could have my way.

She did disgusting things to the bathroom and the spare bedroom. (Involving faeces... and lots of fake tan...)

If anyone's got any serious plans to come by this part of the States I'd be willing to discuss accomodations or travel help. Suppose I'm a sucker for the idea of people across the world helping each other out, or maybe I've just got too much Canadian infuence. :hehe:
Out of morbid curiosity, is there a story to this?

I think I guesstimated the psychological gap between "friends of friends" and "people in the forums" to be smaller. Personally I live with three friends in a huge house and during the half a year I've been here SO many (for me, anyway) random people have waken up from our couches and around the place it's now something I consider normal :)

But yeah I suppose for normal people living in normal (and small, for that matter) homes housing random people can be a problem and definitely worrying.

I used to live in a house with 6 other people so waking up to randoms on the sofa/floor/stairs wouldn't be anything new. I think the main thing I would have an issue with is leaving them in my flat when I'm not around ie when i go to work.

There is a different mentality when you're sharing with a lot of people as well, I knew I had a lock on my bedroom door so anything valuable was locked in there when i went out. It was generally accepted that anything left in the communal areas was left there at your own risk.
