I've been reading some threads etc... and have heard about BTX, i know its the next step and will be introduced soon i just wanna know what will change As in to upgrade to BTX will you just need a new mobo or a case and psu as well? Cheers Death
I think it's the 'standard case design' that is to change. Ie, a BTX case will be different to an ATX case. I'm not sure if the PSU standard specification will change or not, haven't done a lot of research on the subject yet. I think the BTX format basically means that there's more airflow over the cpu area so that it can be kept cooler. That's the impression I've got, anyway.
Aghhh Thats gonna be a total ballache, that means (prob) next year i'll have to buy a new case, mobo and mod all over again, oh the good times Death
as far as i know the BTX uses the ATX power supplies so you don't have to switch PSU, there is some stuff about it on www.tomshardware.com
well it's not soon that everything will be BTX since motherboards makers won't leave the ATX setup soon. you'll definitly need a new mobo and case. the powersupply should be the same. BTX is meant to provide a better airflow so that the cpu is lower without having to use highend heatsinks/develop new heatsinks technologies... we all have plenty of time before we have to switch case so there's nothing to worry about ^^ I guess that will depends of the sellings of the firsts btx case/mobos...
Unless you are willing to hack up an old PSU then you will need a new PSU. BTX uses a new, larger main mobo power connecter
Summary of needs: New Motherboard, New CPU (obsiously), new Power Supply, and possibly new CD and DVD drives, as I didnt see in the specifications IDE cables supported.
It is true that ATX will still be around for a while, but they may become a problem when everything starts getting made for BTX. Also, the next time you upgrade mobos will probably be for PCI Express and DDR2 (unless you buy stuff all the time like me ), so you might as well go BTX at that time (assuming its out then). I can just imagine the havoc when everyone tries to sell their ATX stuff and there will be so much competition that you are forced to sell for practically nothing. (Or maybe I'm just messed up upstairs )
