Budget: <=1500 Main uses of intended build: Gaming (FPS/RTS), some TV/DVDs. Parts required: All Previous build information (list details of parts): None Monitor resolution: 1920*1080 Storage requirements: Just OS + some games (I have an external HDD for data) Will you be overclocking: yes Any motherboard requirements (no. of USB, Xfire/SLI, fan headers): SLI. Future proofed a little. Extra information about desired system: Minimalist looking case (Fractal Design R2/ Antec 300?). Quiet, dust free and cool. While the budget is relaxed, I'd prefer to spend less. Will put a second GF in SLI in the future. Prefer GF as I like PhysX and CUDA even though heat +power from GF is high. But prepared to be swayed to Ati. I also would prefer to buy all components from one place and have them assemble and test (I dont want to have to play the "find out which components are dud" game). Monitor suitable for gaming and watching TV/DVDs on. Approx 24" preferred. My last was a 40" LCD TV so all sizes around this range will be similar to me. Must be 1920*1080 or better. I see the buyers guide has everything different apart from the CPU... eg: Should I get an intel 750, 860, 875k, 920, 930, etc? Should I air cool or water cool? Should I OC to 4GHz, or try for 4.5GHz? Etc. What monitor should I get? I'm thinking HannsG HH251HP based on this buyers guide. Want to keep the budget down... Should I buy from a place in London since I live there (eg: http://www.yoyotech.co.uk), or does it not matter much? (I've just moved to the UK from NZ so not sure about things like that). Cheers, Ben.

(I do want to put a second 470 on later). I think the Antec 300 case is good enough for cooling based on the review of the Utgard. The Titan Fenrir also seems to be a totally sufficient cooler. Opinions?
for that price i would spec a similar machine to the one i just recently built: case: Antec 300 - £37.48 Memory: 6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 1600MHz DDR3- £142.32 Motherboard: Asus P6T SE - £151.77 CPU: Intel Core i7 920 - £179.97 CPU Cooler: Titan Fenrir V2 - £29.95 PSU: Antec Truepower 750W modular - £92.53 HDD: 1TB Samsung F3 - £54.03 GPU: Asus 5850 1GB - £223.23 ODD:Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE - £14.97 total: £1039.03 dont know much about monitors to advise you on one (maybe someone else can) but the 5850 will easily be able to handle a monitor of 1920 x 1080.
Thanks StudioRecorder, Is it worthwhile going to a 920 over an 860? what are the practical differences once overclocked? Where did you buy your components? Did they assemble?

Go for the i7 920 or 930, you will get 4GHz on air. Then go for a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R, it is cheaper than the m/b you have spec'd. The Titan Fenrir is a much better cooler than the Noctua. £275 for a Zotac 470 looks cheap, the cheapest I can find on a reputable site is £289.99 at www.overclock.co.uk. Regarding where to buy from, I have purchased from the following online traders over the years: www.scan.co.uk (free delivery if you have posted 20 time in this forum) www.cclonline.com (another free delivery option for regular posters to this forum) www.ebuyer.com (they offer free delivery as well) www.aria.co.uk www.overclockers.co.uk www.dabs.com www.quietpc.co.uk My current preferences are for Scan and Ebuyer due to the free delivery and good prices.
If you don't want the hassle, you can buy guaranteed overclocked bundles here: http://www.scan.co.uk/shops/3XS/bundles?_s_icmp=yH5WRg6u http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=339 http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=491
Yeah, I normally assemble, but if any components are dud it'll be a real hassle to figure out whats gone wrong. I figure its much less hassle to buy all components from one place and get them to assemble. Less fun as well, but thats a trade I'm willing to make. Thanks for the list of websites, will price up a system in each.
You won't get an entire system from Quiet PC, only bits and pieces. It was more for reference. One more thing... a 470 (or two) are going to run hot. Choose your case carefully.
I think the Antec 300 seems pretty good (GBP~38), it performs the same cooling as the Cooler Master ATCS 840 (GBP~165) in this review. Based on that I dont know why I wouldnt buy it...
Cool, I hadn't spotted the Antec 300 lurking in the charts. Will it fit the 470? Quote from Antec website... "Maximum video card size: 11"/279mm (Note: some video cards may block access to the adjacent hard drive bay)" Maybe someone who has both can post a comment?
http://www.viritech.com/zotac-geforce-gtx-480-desaign-uber-graphics.html length of 268 mm http://www.zotacusa.com/zotac-geforce-gtx-470-1280mb-320-bit-607mhz-3348mhz-zt-40201-10p.html width - 241.3mm guessing the manufacturer is right, but even with the other "measurement" it'll still clear. But would also be good to hear from someone with both just to make sure. I also dont know if the cooler will fit in the case.
I'd look at this setup as well Get rid of the 5850 and put in a GTX470 instead (got 2 of these) Not sure on the case - other can give advice there Always look at the Scan Today's Deal's as well - they always have very good deals to save a few quid. MB+Ram etc
