So, it’s time for a new build. (well it’s been time for a few years really) :D
Thanks to a good cashback-offer on the motherboard, this month is the deadline while I would like to wait a bit for some of the components to come down a bit.
As I don’t have to much time in the next few months anyway, and we’ll be mainly surfing first, I thought I might buy in two tranches.

    Ah: the obligatory part
Budget: Well, as cheap as possible really, though not capped.
Main uses of intended build: Gamin’ surfin’ ****…errrr, gereral family PC + HTPC …Bit calles this the “Gaming Workhorse”
    Parts required: Most
Previous build information (list details of parts): see sig.
Monitor resolution: 1920*1080, or 1920*1080+1280*1024, or 3840*1080…for now who knows what in a couple years time
    Storage requirements: yes please
Will you be overclocking: yes/no (delete as required) Mayhaps
Any motherboard requirements (no. of USB, Xfire/SLI, fan headers): good onboard sound
Extra information about desired system: As quiet as my cheapyness will get me, and secondary HDMI-out.

Part 1(To be purchased this week)

    197€ - i5-3570K
125€ - Asus Maximus V Gene (Thx to 25€ cashback)
    38€ - 8GB 2x Kit 1600 DDR3
    87€ - 2TB Ecogreen or similar
    83€ - Win7 64

Part 2(To be purchased March-April ish)

    NVidia GTX670 (currently 350€)
SSD Then, hopefully a 256GB one

    Two Questions:
    The SSD,
buy it now? (Samsung 120GB 840 for 83€) Would save me the hassle of reinstalling later, but the 256GB ones might come down from their current 150€)

    The PSU.
I don’t want to skimp on it, but I don’t want to pay an unnecessery fortune.
The Corsair HX650 seems to be recommended here. It’s 103€
The Corsair TX650 is only 80€, is the non-detachable cables the only difference?
I’ll take any well known brand that’s quiet really. There are lots on offer for around 80€

Just to avoid some questions on forehand, yes, there are two things missing:

No case, I’ll reuse an old one that already has filters and 120mm fans.
No additional cooler, I don’t plan on overclocking, I buy overclockable parts because in my experience they offer a superior lifetime when not overclocked.
Besides I can always buy an additional cooler and clock the nuts off it later :D

    Looking forward to your thoughts,

    Xir

    Hmmm,

    I'll need a SATA DVD-drive, haven't got one. :D

How would I connect the drives?

    SSD and FDD on SATA6?
    DVD on SATA3?

or would the FDD "brake" the SSD?

    FDD? Floppy disk drive?

Put the optical drive on a SATA 300Mbit/s port as it doesn't support SATA 600Mbit/s anyway, and save the faster ports for your SSDs and HDDs.

Your build looks pretty good to me. An SSD is a big improvement so get it as soon as possible. As for the power supply, a 550W unit would be plenty. Check out the Seasonic G series as well.

Sorry yes, HDD, not FDD :D

    550 Watt's okay? good.
I'd been checking the PSU'S in the buyers guide, hence the 650W version.

There's no difference between the modular/semi-modular/non-modular Corsair series. It mostly down to aesthetics and slightly easier cable management.

You say you don't want an additional cooler, but if you want a really quiet pc I can highly recommend the Gelid Tranquillo. It's as silent as a mouse with tonsillitis and a bargain at £25! If you do want to overclock at some point, it is also a pretty good cooler

Hmmm, Corsairs 550W or the like are not really available, except the “builder” series CX500V3 / CX600V3 or “Gamer series” Corsair GS600 80plus bronze HX and TX start at 650W

Seasonic G series is out of stock… The M12II-520 80plus bronze is available (and mentioned in the “recommended PSU” section here.

    How about this:
    Be Quiet! Pure Power L8-530W/CM
Got a good review on Tom’s, supposedly very quiet.

    73€ - Seasonic M12II-520
    70€ - Be Quiet! Pure Power L8-530W/CM
    80€ - Corsair TX650V2
