    I'm having prob's trying to connect to the the server via the ip. everything looks ok , i'm on the setting up of samba

    Code:
    #
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    #
    #
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    #
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentary and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    #
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.
    #

    It seems that you are only sharing printers, not data

    you can add something like

    Code:
    [ShareName]
            path = /path/to/share
            Comment = Whatever Comment you want
            browseable = yes
            writable = yes
    Also, if you want to share the home directories
    Code:
    [homes]
            comment = Home Directories
            browseable = yes
            writable = yes
            security mask = 0700
            create mask = 0700

    This is all new to me but I am going to give it ago. Is there a way you can use this server as an Email Exchange as well?

    My server's been up and running without issues for month, so I think it's safe to post a few tips:

    1)the instructions indicate that if you want to use a graphical editor, you can install GEDIT. There is one already in the stock installation of Xubuntu - mousepad, It works fine in setting this up

    2) this is touched on a few times, and I think it bears repeating - if you copy the commnand line instructions from here and paste into your terminal, be sure to overtype the "-" characters . . . the ones on the webpages were not the same characters as linux was expecting. I spent 2 days till I figured that out.

    3) In my case I also installed the azureus torrent client, with the webgui front end. I did it because:
    a - (weak) I wanted to let upnp handle the portforwarding
    b - (better) I wanted to run safepeer
    c - (best) I need to encrypt the traffic due to packet shaping by my ISP, and torrentflux looked like it would be hard.
    I needed to do a search to get the most recent version, as the azureus in the package manager was outdated.

    4) I have been messing around with WIKIs recently and the TWIKI install found in packet manager works fine with all of this. Now I also have a personal WIKI

    so far there have been no issues with either my XP box or my apple boxes using the server.

    Next I want to check out part 2 and see what upgrades I need

    Hi and thanks for your feedback. I am still at the beginning of the server installation process. How did you go about installing azereus?

    Tip:
    "install <package name> ubuntu" in google - the first result usually tells you what you want to know

    Hi, I've tried looking through the large number of posts here, but I'm not sure I've found my answer!
    I'm a bit new to this, got an eeepc and decided linux is the future!
    I've installed samba, but when i try to add user/passwd i get the following message:
    Failed to modify password entry for user
    Any ideas? Is there somewhere to set up the lists of users? Am I just rubbish?
    Thanks

    Think I found my problems on Page 14! Thanks anyway

    I have downloaded Xubuntu 7.10 Live CD and everything is there but once I install the disk Samba goes missing. Does anyone have any ideas what I should do...

    Hello

    Just finish my installation and editing of the smb.conf .

    That's where i'm stuck: (Now, lets check if our hard work did it's job. From another workstation (a Windows XP one, for instance), open )
    I can't connect to the server from my computer. When you edit the "smb.conf" <b>do you delete all the content of that file and replace it by the one posted?</b>

    I'm a photographer and I work with 3 computers, so i'm trying to get this server to be our central storage for images.

    Any help would be appreciated...

    Thank you

    Hello

    Somehow I can get to the share folder, after setting it up, by Going "Start-run-IPaddress" enter.
    Why can't i get to the server by typing the address in the browser?

    Yep and still counting...

    I guess i'm gonna have to go thru the 18 pages to find a solution, as I'm also having problems with "proftpd.conf" line 98... sounds familiar?

    just to check when you are entering the IP address into the run box you are remembering to put 2 backslashes in first right?

    ie:

    Code:
    \\192.168.1.2

    yes, i tried every thing, but I think that I should maybe reconfigure the workgroup , since I already have a workgroup set up for my other computers.

    Is there a way to add the server to the existing workgroup? or should I create a new workgroup ?

    Thanks

    Somehow, setting up this server has been a real headache for me, now downloading UltraVNC, after opening the zip file, and opening the .exe my virus protection ( pccillin) detects a virus and stop the process. They talk about this issue on the forum of UlraVNC, so now i'm trying to fix this one, anything else...????
