everyone builds their own desktop systems but is it as easy to build your own laptop? i know u can get hdd for laptops at most online shops but what about cases with built in tft's? mobos and other laptop specific stuff? fancied getting a laptop but thought as any self respecting person would that i would rather build my own than buy from a high street retailer... any thoughts or info?
I think that's gonna be almost impossbile. Everything is integrated into the mobo, so the only thing you'd be able to change would be the CPU and the RAM. Laptop screens are also amazingly expensive if you try to buy them as seperate items. We had a Toshiba 8100 that got stood on. Toshiba wanted several hundred pounds (can't remember the exact figure) just for a new screen. Needless to say, it was better value to buy a new laptop. And then you need to buy a case that will the mobo. So for instance a Toshiba mobo will only fit a Toshiba case, as the port cutouts will be in the wrong place otherwise. So once you done that, you might just as well have bought the complete Tosh portable in the first place and saved yourself the hassle and extreme expense.
nope, you can't build your own laptop .... kinda in the same region as trying to bulid a mobile phone.
When I was in the phone business I made a 3310 out of spares once. I was amazed when it actually worked! 'twas a great feeling. But I'm in agreement with the others about the laptop, you can't build one, and no one would think any less of you for buying a branded one. I bought a Time laptop, whatever you get is bound to have more kudos than that (albeit expensive) piece of junk.
you know, guys, I think you may be dismissing the thought a bit too early... Ok, building a true laptop, no. BUT, if you made a slim case for a miniATX or flexATX mobo/hardware, and put an LCD screen on hinges... Just a thought.
I disagree. Building a laptop IS possible, though the parts are hard to get. I have rebuilt my thinkpad many times and it's worked on those occasions. I am getting a box of thinkpad spares soon so I can build a few for ppl I know...
Yes, but you're "re-building". There's a difference. You're using ThinkPad mobos, ThinkPad casings and so-on. You haven't been out and bought different components from different manufacturers as you would do with a desktop PC. Constructing a small form factor PC with an integrated screen (like a Shuttle with a 5" screen) would be a reasonable compromise, but you have plug it into the mains. You're not going to have a stack of batteries so that you can just switch it on and use it whenever you feel like it.
Unless you use a marine battery (like those used on 4x4 rigs as secondaries for winches and whatnot) with an inverter! or if someone knows about the power consumption in a laptop. I know the components are designed to take less power from the battery, but still, how the stuff is wired up to the battery in a normal laptop may allow one to make use of a larger battery in a home-made??
they should make standards for laptops.. that way we can buy different parts and stuff.. maybe one day
you can build them but its way more expensive than buying 1 neway laptops are getting cheaper and cheaper now
Power for a laptop is 5V isn't it? A good Li-ION camcorder battery would do the trick if you could find one with the right specs.
or you could buy an old junked laptop for a few pounds and steal the battery mounts and wiring. omg.... i sence a clear laptop coming on
Probably wont ever happen..As they did that with desktops and look what happened....Just imagine if we all had to buy compaqs or dells *shudders* I looked into it before and you can do it but you have to buy ~1,000 of each part to get it cheaper then you can buy it from the store. *each part = cpu, mobo, casing, ect....* When i went to calculated it out the ammount of zeros made me stop counting...
