Whats up guys, how you doing? Just registered here.... been on this site for ages now and thought its about time to join! Well I am building a new PC and want to keep my wallet on a leash, so to speak. Here is what I have came up with: CPU £152 Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition (Overclocked to 3.2 - 3.5Ghz) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-172-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793 MOTHERBOARD £140 Asus P5E Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-249-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=946 MEMORY £70 GeIL 4GB PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL GRAPHICS CARD £234 EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB SSC GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-045-EA&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008 CASE £72 Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-065-AN PSU £88 Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-CS HEATSKIN £39 Thermalright IFX-14 CPU Cooler (with x2 120mm fans) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-048-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=821 TOTAL £795 I have x2 74 GB raptors, 250 GB HD and a soundcard which is why you don't see them there. I will also be buying a 22" Monitor (1680x1050 Resolution) and Vista Ultimate 64bit. Now will this system run all the latest games max at 1680 x 1050 with 4x AA at nice frames 40-60+ (games such as COD4, UT3, World in Conflict, Bioshock). Now of coarse Crysis as this is the MAIN reason for building a new rig, as I know it will not be able to run ultra as nothing can and thats even top end systems, but what about all high settings with 2x AA with frames averaging in the 40s, o yes and in DX10? Also would there be changes to be made in this system I will be building? I would really like if you guys could get back to me as it would help me alot! Cheers fellas rez1n
That graphics card is an absolute rip-off. For £230 you can get a new 512mb 8800GTS. Also, the X38 is a good chipset, but I'd get a P35 based board, just because its cheaper and I can't see much advantage. Both are great though. But overall, it looks like a good selection! FYI I played Crysis on High on my system, it did struggle toward the end, but it should be fine on yours - particularly if you change the 8800GT to a GTS (the new 512mb version).
Hi oasked, well is there alot of difference between the GT and 512mb GTS? I was also looking at this: EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB GDDR3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-042-EA&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927 And if the new graphic cards are coming out in Feb and I get this new system in Jan the 90 day setup plan from EVGA means I could upgrade just by paying the extra costs. And if they are coming out in Feb maybe I'll hold out for the 22" and get a 24" and hopefully Crysis would run nice on it with high/ultra settings.
The 8800GT is a great card, but not at that price (I got mine for £160). Basically the 8800GTS is the same as the 8800GT, but its a little bit faster (~10%). Check out Bit-Tech's review, here. The eVGA card looks good, but I would just go with whichever cards are in stock (otherwise you won't get the card anytime soon). I know eVGA do a step-up program, but you'll still be able to sell your card on in February (if you really wanted to) and the card isn't going to be obselete anytime soon.
Scrap the X38, not as good as the P35 for overclocking. New 8800GTS, and scrap the case. Choose the CM690. Buy from Scan, not overclockers.
Yeah I read the review and I'm impressed by the new GTS, it some cases it outproforms the GTX but when you bump up the AA and Res the GTX still stands its ground. Cheers oasked. Thanks for you're reply lamboman. A few people have pointed out to me that the X38 chipset motherboards arnt as good at overclocking, I hear good things about Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard, what do you fellas think? The case is meant to be value for money and there are lots of reviews on the net about how good it is, hummm. I'm also now torn between EVGA new GTS and do the step program and upgrade to the new cards next year, or get the 8800GTX from scan which is just £234 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=611289
The Abit IP35 Pro is indeed brilliant (apparently) - supposedly the best of the P35 boards. For pure gaming, get the GTX otherwise get the GTS for its far superior video acceleration skills (PureVideo).
I actually disagree - the basic P5E has the Asus EPU which when used, greatly reduces the system's idle power and the auto-overclock function works exceptionally well too. However if you're overclocking manually you can't really use it - I've no idea what it'll take a Q66 to on auto-oc. If you don't care about that - get a P35 and spend the difference on a GTX, but for the price of that GT, I'd get a GTX anyway - those prices aren't the cheapest around but then again you are only paying a single delivery cost. Some might argue that the hassle of dealing with OCUK's "legandary" customer service, should something go wrong, is enough to avoid them also. Overall, excellent choices imo.
