I am currently planning to use msi's k6speedster series (info here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/server/svr/pro_svr_detail.php?UID=637
i was thinking of using 2 dual-core opterons, but am not sure 1: if the ram has to be paired, and what sizes or ram i can use - as in can i use 4 gig sticks, or is it limited to 2 gig stick? Also, not sure if I want o go with xista or xp for my primary OS - althouigh i'm gonna be doing a dual-boot with various flavors of linux till i find the one i like best.

    From your link:
    .

So it seems 1GB sticks will be fine.

I would still steer clear of vista personally but plenty of people are using it and starting to like it.

so that would be 8 separate 2 gig sticks for a total of 16 gigs then, right? Also, it will be july at least before i get to the point of installing the OS, do you think thats sufficient time for them to patch vista enough for it to be worthwhile?
Also i have heard vista does not recognize multiple processors right - like on the board i listed it would only see one of the 2 processors - is there any validity to this?

I'm pretty sure Vista will be capable of seeing multiple CPUs.
XP can do it so for Vista to not be able would be stupid.

It may depend on which version of Vista you get as to whether it allows you to install on a multi-proc machine.

What you planning to use this machine for?

oh, sorry, missed the question lol - i will be running http, ftp, and mail servers, as well as dedicated game servers, audio and video editing, compiling and burning, file downloading, databases of several types for different things each, structural design, graphics design, running security cameras and recording their output as needed (im wanting to set it up where the record funtion of the security cameras are motion-activated, then record to the hdd, and learning then doing programming. Oh, and of course gaming :)

Vista wont be slow with 2 opterons in it, and especially with 4gb of ram, however you will need some sort of decent GFX for vista to be worth while.

    Depends on your gaming resolution.

Nvidia G80: if you're not going to be gaming at more then 1280x1024 for a long time get a 640MB 8800GTS, if you're going larger/want more life go for 8800GTX 768MB.

But the ATi competitor to nVidia's G80 is the R600, which rumours has as being better by a lot. But no-one *actually* knows.

well, i know i will be doing a lot of gaming once i have the system up, and i do like using the higher resolutions, also i know i need the tvout capacity. Also, i have to have a tv capture card, but i know there are some vid cards with integrated capture cards - are the all-in-one vid cards worth it or is it actually better to get teh capture card and vid card separate?

I always wonder would your system be running at double the CPU speed for instance say i press window+pause would my CPU speed show as(2xAMD37002.21GHz) 4.22GHz or would it show up as 2 seperate CPU's.
