I'm looking at building an external hard drive case to house 2 hard drives and connect to the computer via firewire. I've got the IDE - firewire converter. I'm trying to figure out how to use a power supply I already have.

Usually the power supply gets it's signal to turn on from the motherboard but there wont be a motherboard in this case....how do I do that?

Thanks for any help you can give!

For an ATX supply that follows the coloring scheme, you connect the green wire on the motherboard connector to any black connector.

If there is no green wire, google for ATX pinout

Wire the coil of a small 12v relay between firewire ground and firewire Vcc, and the normally open contacts between the green wire of the PSU and a black wire of the PSU.
A transistor and some resistors can be used as well.
