I found this via the Chillblast site:

Balancing lateral scooters, like the Segway™ are often thought to be technological miracles, but it is not actually very hard to build a balancing scooter. I built the one described here for my own amusement, and to help me understand the control theory behind it. (I work a lot on balance, mostly for walking humanoid robots.)

I put this scooter together in a week using off the shelf parts. Altogether it cost about $2000, or $2500 if you include the "one-time" costs of buying development kits and parts I ended up not using.

Full details here. Worth reading just for the comparison chart!

It pays to debug your code on a project like this:
    Ouch! :D

I read the article, but it is still expensive to build your own tho.....

Strikes me as another triumph for the fat and lazy disease ;) Never got really why anyone would want a Segway over a bike? For £4000 I can make a very nice rigid bike lol and I can ride it over terrain the Segway would curl up and die at

No thanks. Rather have a nice bicycle. If I needed something that was powered, I'd go with one of those electric scooters - longer distances would be a moped or my car ;)

Uh, how can this be THAT tiring!? Dude, if that makes you tired, I'm afraid to hear what WALKING does! :D

lmao @ the video over the steep curb!
He needs better motors and some bigger wheels, then the ride would be faster/smoother (a bit) and could get over bumps a heck of a lot easier... 'course that means he'd have to forget about riding it around inside without ducking through doorways... worth it if you ask me.
His wheels look like they're ~9"... segway's wheels are closer to 2'...

The idea that people can build it on their own is quite interesting though...

I too would rather a bike, but only if it had a motor on it
