Now that you've said that, I think I've got it! Not quite as bad as you describe as I'm good at maths, but the rest of the stuff I can relate to. Or I could just be paranoid. Still nice to know I'm not alone with my bizarre-ness. Back to Dyslexia I have a friend that is dyslexic (why would they name a condition about bad spelling "Dyslexia" Its just plain cruel!"). I first I thought it was just a sob story, but after a while you start to notice things, handwriting is pretty bad, and he makes genine mistakes, he really cant see the mistakes. Though his reading isnt too bad, he has to read some common words phonetically. Ive noticed though, dyslexics seem to resort to phonetics - so they can atleast communicate on some level. He prefers using "txting" language because its mainly phonetic. Is this common among dyslexics? Still being dyslexic is one thing, ripping the system off is another. Free laptops etc - Why? Why not give them a dictaphone, and submit work aurally? Giving a laptop a medium that requires you to type words I think wouldnt be the best solution.
isnt that the whole point of the net n stuff, so we dont have to type right or be all correct? im not writing an essay for a uni degree!
Yes. I have a friend who's dyslexic, and while it's usually bearable, you do notice things. First off, lots and lots of computer things are abbreviated. He'll say/type things like "EID", or "STAA", and such, and while it's an easy thing to notice, sometimes it just makes you go "wha?". As for handwriting.......It's pretty bad (but then again, so is mine, and I'm not dyslexic ) I am getting quite annoyed with the seemingly low-intellectualism of some of the people here...when you can't even make sense of a post to try and help a person, it's quite frusterating. Then again, a lot of that is lazyness, what with people not reading over their posts. And a lot of that is that people don't know proper manners...I mean, sure it's a forum, but learn to not use all caps and such. Besides that, I'm a grammatic freak. When I see the wrong form of "a/an", or "good/well", it drives me insane. Don't even get me started on their, there, and they're. Your and you're? Its and it's? Dog's? Fred's? Wireles's? Seems like people just chuck apostraphe's in where they they can.... But, I'm kinda weird
Something that has helped my spelling is my purchase of a Powerbook.. OSX has spell checker built in to a lot of things.. I catch myself spelling words wrong and correct them real time and learn from it. I think I am a better speller because of that. -emu
I won't comment on the dyslexia, because I'd probably upset rather a lot of people. However, one thing that does annoy me is the way that people cannot punctuate a sentance correctly, and constantly make exactly the same typo - a classic example of this is "teh". FFS, stop being lazy and learn to type that very common string of letters in the correct order - more often than not when typing, a t is followed by a h, and not an e. Constant spelling mistakes and grammatical illegibilities really get on my tits too, but I guess I can live with that by reading people's posts over several times. However, as cpemma has said, how can I respect someone's opinion if they don't know how to communicate in a clear and legible manner?
Dyslexia can be overcome for the most part. My friends family are almost all dyslexic, cept the mother and one of the brothers. The oldest my Best friend is dyslexic, but he is a lazy person as well. And uses it has a badge or an excuse, on the flipside, his younger brother who is also dyslexic tries at things, and remembers things when he asks me. We use to play a MMORPG together and I noticed that My friends dad, and Nick were never afraid to ask me how to spell something, but my friend would rarely ask. It's harder for them to spell, and retain spelling in my experience, but it's definitely not impossible.
I can understand your dyslexia causing you to spell words phonetically or getting letters mixed up (like handwrithing, writting, backwords, perpose etc) but you can just spellcheck, firefox and IE both have plugin spellcheckers so thats no excuse. Using 'u' instead of 'you' or '1nce' instead of 'once'is also incredibly annoying, I mean ffs '1nce' doesnt even reduce the number of letters in the word. Also using excessive numbers of exclamation marks doesn't help that **** just pisses people off. Personally i tend to just skip over posts that dont make any ****ing sense, if the first sentence is packed full of 'l33t' and piss poor grammar i just wont read the rest of the post
I'm not dyslexic... well at least i dont think I am On the whole I like to think my spelling is very good. Any mistakes are usually down to me typing in a rush
Oo, my bugbear. Firstly, on topic. I truly believe that some people claim to be dyslexic in order to account for their a) bad spelling, punctuation and grammar or b) the fact they can't be bothered. (Primarily the latter when they get a lot of hassle from people publicly). Without wanting to sound pompus, I've been on the net a long time and have interacted with lots and lots of people and it seems more recently users have been claiming dyslexia to account for their writing style, whereas in the past it was just deemed considerate to post in a well articulated way. Granted, I speak online with a great deal more people now than then, but the percentage of those who claim dyslexia today would still have been apparent then, yet I think I probably came across one or two people who had it in about five years compared to dozens on this forum alone in the last three. No, that's true, but as has been stated above you are effectively conversing with potentially millions of people and as such it should be plain consideration that you write in a clear and easily understandable way. I'm not saying everyone should have perfect grammar and spelling, hell I make mistakes in both and don't excuse myself for them. In fact, I've likely made mistakes in this post, which people who feel they want to attack the 'grammar police' would love to point out. The fact is that it's normal for someone to spell a couple of words wrong, miss a full stop here and there or just basically say something in a bad way, but it's relatively inexcusable in the majority of cases to write and spell like a 4 year old when you're interacting with people via a written medium. I have no problem saying to people "What? I can't understand you" if I don't get what they're saying to me verbally, so I don't see any reason why I can't do the same thing online. I have no need to learn l33t or TXT, I speak perfectly good english and expect anyone else who can to do the same. The scariest part is that by not encouraging people to use better spelling and grammar, we're breeding the text-generation and effectively removing the nice flowing style of the english language and making it crude and 'efficient'. That's doubleplusungood.
