Possibly less warranty, maybe less features like the 7 speed DSG a lot of VWs are getting now, but Seats are based off the same platform as most VWs and IMO look a lot more attractive. Edit: Krikkit has put it better than me
oh right nice! well thats good then they will be reliable! cant find any decent cupra's for cheap under 100k miles tho maybe look into the ibiza? or standard leon? 2.0 litre ibiza is slooww like 10.5 0-60 , so they obviously take a leaf from vw then how is a 1.4 mg so quick (in relative terms) i test drove a 2.0ltr gti golf and it was shite slow. or maybe it was buggered. i sometimes drive a company car, 1.9tdci vectra and that thing flys in comparison just found a pug 306 gti 6 for £2400 72k miles in oxford, worth a shot?
The ZR has a powerful 1.4 engine, rather than one detuned for reliability. Headgasket anyone? Its also a lot lighter than a golf. A modern 1.9/2.0 turbo diesel will pull better in gear than a 2.0 NA petrol, plus the way the power is delivered makes it feel quicker, the diesel gives you a big shove circa 2-2.5k rpm, whereas the petrol builds up to it at 5-7k
yeh diesel have that effect, i was quite amazed. plus better mpg. how often will a head gasket blow on a zr? maybe i shud look for a t diesel of some kind
I was joking about the headgasket - the K series Rover engines are known for headgasket troubles, but I don't know if the ZR actually uses a K series. If I was buying a fun/weekend car I'd be buying a petrol with at least 6 cylinders. If I was buying another daily driver it would be a common rail turbo diesel every time.
What is fun for you? Blasting around the B roads at the limits of a slower car? Blasting around the B roads in a fast car? Straight line fun? Track days?
I have a mk5 fiesta zetec S. It's only a 1.6 petrol but i find it rather fun... More fun than any big car I've ever driven. I have it lowered and have my suspension on "hard" setting so It's major fun on b roads/windy lanes. Small cars like this can deffinately hold their own and be great fun on windy roads, It corners a proper beast!! Personally i think it looks nice too, Not in your face boy racer style - just nice and amsart looking. You can pick a 2000 Reg up for aruond £1600 with 80K miles on the clock? I'll upload a picture of mine after work if yuo want to see it
yeah sure thanks mate sounds like a fun car, be good to do a few jobs on the car i get, after all its going to be a bit of fun before uni. get it really twitchy and sharp on the handling. looked at the fiesta and something boy racer springs to mind about the looks of it/chavy? guess if i can pick up a standard one they look smart in the right colour what do you lot think to the 306 gti 6?
Twitchy on public roads is a very bad idea. GTI-6 is a pretty classy bit of kit, a good compromise between speed and comfort, solidity and lightness.
yeah cause i found a gti 6 for £2400 ono 72k miles, mint condition full service history etc, in oxfordshire. maybe shud give that a go http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1486848.htm either that, or a 206 2.0ltr gti 180 306 86k miles?
what are the chances of insurance on that baby..... golf vr6 - dirt cheap and keep the rest for spares and petrol.
Ive been to that keighly place with the evo, I went with kernel to look at a '91 vtec crx a few years ago. Ill be honest they're the biggest bunch of cowboys ive ever come across, even if a car was cheap i wouldnt buy it from them!! Have you had a look at integra typeR's? The 1.8 engine is a peach, great for a blast and not bad driving around in traffic
I've been busy working and lots of good suggestions have been thrown in. Don't get a pre-2002 Fiesta. The 1.6 Zetec in the 02-08 model is pretty quick, but only as much as your mate's car. As you stated you wanted to beat him, I've got a curveball for you.... Octavia 1.8T 4x4 4 wheel drive for better traction with 75 more horsepower than your mate. Over a second quicker to 60 and more top end. It's also quiet, comfortable and reliable. You might fail on the chick front, but that's only until you take them for a ride I'm starting to think 1.8T is the way to go, but a Cupra will be an insurance nightmare. As will a GTI or a vRS (trust me). However, the Octavia came in 1.8T 150ps with Elegance trim, which is top spec, but not sporty. You could always change the suspension though As for the 2.0s, yes they're gay and your mate will run rings around you. A TDI of any decent quality is outside your budget and a 150 is most definitely too rich. In the age your budget allows, a derv isn't gonna beat your mate, but could provide some entertainment nonetheless. On that front I'd be looking for a 110 1.9TDI A3 in Sport trim. As quick as your mate with better economy and loads better put together.
