First of all, my kudos on a great website and forum.

I found the following two pictures at a South African modding forum. As you can see, they're from bit-tech.net (they were used to show how they were going to do their cables, not to steal credit from bit-tech).

    http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/F166.jpg

That's apparantly a headphone jack at the end.

Does anyone remember which mod they were from, as this technique looks rather interesting; and does anyone know how the headphone jack works? Does it conduct the [whatever flows through the cable]?

    Thanks in advance.

From looking at it I would say it is silver cable braid with plastic tubing around it. What do youy mean by how does the headphone jack work?

I'm confused about it, basically. The headphone jack is on the end of the cable, so it should work as some kind of conductor, like it normally does (i.e. when it's plugged in a TV it'll transfer the sound from the TV to the headphones).

So, in some strange way (strange to me anyway), it should transfer the electricity through it? But how does it plug in?

Unless it's a cable for headphones... Hm. Don't drink & read project logs, kids :)

Thanks for the name of the "ingredients" for the sleeving!

You mean its connect straight to the motherboard or what? I don't get what this cable is meant to be doing.

That was just my interpretation of the materials used, no doubt someone around here will better me and say it is made out of plastic coated sleeves available from cablesleevingisus.com, or maybe it is kryptonite.

    Kryptonite would be scary.

The post on that forum didn't say what the cables were for... hence my realisation that it may just be a cable from someone's headphones.

    I'm a n00b, after all :)

It's from ORAC I think. If I remember, he used them as cables and a handy type of connector.

Edit: Read from here onwards. It explains it all.

Those pics were taken from a thread of MINE, and they're hosted in MY photobucket. I used the idea for a mod that i'm busy with.

Those cables are from the ORAC3 machine, and yes, they're earphone jacks at the end :)

They're made of clear techflex cable sleeving and then covered with small tubing, with headphone jacks at the end. Here's some pics of the ones that i made myself:

Those do indeed look awesome. How flexible is the tubing? I guess it's stiff enought there wont be any kinks, but does it put pressure to the connection if they aren't perfectly lined? (The cable is curved and so on)

I don't recommend using them for power since they ground when they're plugged/unplugged so if any of them accidentally get disconnected while the machine is running they'll short out. It would be safer to use DC Power jacks, or RCA phono jacks.

Ah yes, I remember your name I think. Probably from that forum. Nice work, by the way.

So... what are they for? I can see they're plugged in to something, and the combination of alcohol and general stupidity on my part is making me very confused.

For crying out loud could you please try to understand again when you're sober :D Besides, what does it matter what they are for? They could just as well be general multi purpose cables.

In this case I think they are used to replace the ugly power cables.

Well, it's kind of hard being sober, as I've just moved to the UK and I'm in a houseshare with a load of people including two Polish guys. There's more vodka in this house than there is carpet.

Anyway, I think it's not so much the alcohol as my general ignorance towards all things that have to do with electricity. I'm alright(ish) with building a computer, fixing stuff and all that, but electrical things I never touched; mostly because I learned it the hard way to never touch metal things that are connected to the socket (don't you just love those mid-1990s big PSUs :D).

So... ehm, what are they for? I seriously cannot tell; nor comprehend how they work (general ignorance!). The headphone jack works as a conductor, like a standard cable ending would? It makes sense in my head but so does nuclear war, so yeah.

Either way, it's extremely sexy and I'll probably steal the idea once I move out of this house and am able to fiddle around with things that make up cases.

    [edit]
Right, you said "replacing ugly power cables", that would make sense - as power cables tend to be the circus freaks of the case, and then my "it conducts things"-theory makes sense too. Go me. I hope it's true, I'll give myself a gold star for that then - once I actually own my own fridge.

They're for power. I have used them to power lower power devices like fans and LEDs. I've also used them for power switch and reset cables, dvd open/close cables, um.... fan controller power, etc etc etc.

However, as captain slug says, you cannot unplug them while they're on, as it will cause a short. It's no biggie to me though if it shorts as my PSU has a protection system. Besides, what are the chances of one unplugging itself? Literally nothing.

They look like audio cables we use for the video/audio mixer in the tv production lab going from the camera outputs into the audio mixer.
