Well, this is more a close call rather than an actual disaster, but hopefully it'll warn someone...
I've just built myself a new comp, and to go on top of the A64 I bought a Zalman CNPS7000A-ALCU heatsink (<a href="http://www20.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030616/hydrocool200-08.html">linky</a>), it's big and beautiful.
To cut a long story short, whilst I was playing around putting some new cables in, I accidentally knocked a fan cable (well, that funny little 2 wire thing that some psu's have to monitor the fan speed or some such, anyone know what it's really for?), into the heatsink, blocking the fan.
I didn't notice this for a while, but I did wonder idly why UT2k4 kept giving me a bsod after about 5 mins of play. Putting it down to a buggy demo release I fired up some other game I knew worked.
Same result, after a few mins I got a nasty bsod.
Wondering if I'd accidentally OC's my processor a bit much, I ran the little CoreCenter app that msi have on their motherboards (MS6702 K8T800 Neo, fact fans!) and realised that my CPU was running at the rather toasty temperature of 83C.
    Ouch.
Needless to say I had the side off the case damn quick and after flicking the wire out the way the system was back to about 35 degrees.
So, almost a disaster, but it turns out you can use them big zalman heatsinks in an undocumented "passive" mode as well ;)
The cpu still runs fine now, even with a modest bit of overclocking, but remember kids:
    Keep Cables Away From Fans!

u should get an asus board w/ the c.o.p. (shuts down ur computer if it gets too hot.) I've had wires hit fans before. except i use a vantec aeroflow heatsink (v1) with that tmd fan. it chews up wires(and fingers.) it ate up my spdif cable. better a shredded cable than a burnt cpu. :D

:eeek: 83 degrees?!?!?! a tad hot me thinks, but that Zalman HSF looks damn funky. And :duh: for not checking cables before you close your case! Nvm!

*drifts into dream land* i wish i had money :waah:

hot indeed - i would recommend a little program called SpeedFan it will very simply show your CPU temp, and will controll your fan too, if the mobo is compatible.

Forget speedfan, get MBM5. It measures CPU temp, case temp, fan RPMs, everything!

Motherboard Monitor 5 only MEASURES, Speedfan controls your fan as well, so why not get both?

Fingers and fans don't go together too well either! I was showing my mum my new glowing fans (yes we're that easily amused) and she said "is it on?" and proceeded to stick her finger in the fan, which left her with a big gash across her thumb. I've done it too but never cut myself.

I di that with my XP1900 - I fitted an 80mm fan, then proceeded to leave it unplugged. I wondered why windows just froze, so I proceeded to take the case off - then I realised the new fan wasn't spinning. The processor went up to 84 degrees C!

MBM 5 won't give me accurate readings for some reasion. i know its wrong because i got Seti@home and it thinks my CPU usage is at 0%. also the fan speed readings are wrong becuase i change the speed after starting the program and it gives the wrong speed.

Looks like I might have started a new contest, forget refrigeration, what's the highest temp you can get windows to run at? (And when you destroy your box, forget who told you to do it mmkay?)
And yeah, I just downloaded SpeedFan, but I've not installed it yet, Although I'm thinking about fitting some kind of front panel controls for the fans, and hopefully a temp/rmp display as well. Is there any particularly good all in units out there or should I just build on myself?
