how much damage would an occasional calgon (or similar) tablet do to a WC setup to prevent limescale buildup?

Deionised water can be got for about 70p a litre from supermarkets or cheeper from car shops. There is no excuse to use tap water in PC's, particulary with our crap water in the UK. Calgon also creates bubbles in your system as part of the chemical reaction. Lastly it reacts with some rubbers, like the seals on your pump.

I only use deionised or distilled water with wetter water in my system.
