Ok so i happened accross a powermac 5400... Does anyone know if say a g4 board and parts could fit in this thing? I need to do something to it, it is begging
I don't know for certain, but I'd put my money on it not fitting as standard, eg. time for some modding!
so why the mac attack... I think modding one would be pretty cool... I have seen some Really cool case mods on mac cases. I like it... Variety is the spice of life... If most every mod on this board has to do with the case, and not the OS, then why be so negative about a different case just because it is a mac... Narrowmindedness in my opinion.
Well, i got the mac for free from a friend who was throwing it out. The system in it blows but is one of these , and i would like a mac g4 with osx 10.2 on it, just to have and be able to play with. Maybe i will just plant a big P4 in there instead???
I am a PC user myself, but have worked with MACs as well, and my advice is ignore what everyone says and do your own thing! The g4 parts and board should fit, just like my athlon processor & board will fit in my old Gateway 2000 case from 98. It will just take a bit of modding. Don't be afraid to cut stuff up you don't intend to keep the way it is. But remember, measure twice, cut once, and take lots of pictures!
The reason to not mod Macs now is this patent thing they're doing! They're basically trying to copyright case lighting or something like that. Who wants a bet they'll release a "Apple Fanbus Pro" that's clear, USB and costs £90?
I have owned macs for many years (ever since my first Apple IIE), I love them. In fact, I'm using one right now because my stupid $2000 Athlon system won't start! So yes, macs are great, they loko good, and don't crash. As for the G4 upgrade chip fitting in, well, there's a great place to check for that. www.xlr8yourmac.com I go there for all of my mac modding needs. You should be able to get an upgrade as long as it has a PCI, and not a NuBus slot, but yours is a 5400 series mac, so it should have it. Don't forget to post pics!
Only problem with Macs is that they crash as much as Windows does nowadays (Windows is better, MacOS is worse ) and when you want to upgrade you're limited to dodgy PCI based upgrades which are never as fast or chucking out the old mac and buying a new one :/
SHUT UP all of you bunch of petty bloody children no they're not - if you'd actually read the article in question you would know this... 'or something like that' indeed.. ...**** *n
that was the online equivelant of 'i know you are but what am i?' *n [edit - my apologies for screwing this thread...just trying to be a counter to the pointless mac bashing by the PC zealots here...annnnnd - my 'shut up' was bigger than yours ]
ALL OF U SHUT UP That said, i have found a g4 logic board chip and all needed parts to go with, now i just need to justify the funds. Will keep everyone updated, thanks for all the help
Jesus man, I wasn't slagging Macs off. I was trying to level it out a bit. Macs are great for people who want an easy to use computer to write letters on etc, but PCs are generally better at almost everything else. I only said about how Macs seem to crash as much as PCs nowadays because it's the argument that 99% of people use when they say Macs are better than PCs. The other 1% say that Macs are better for using Photoshop, which again, nowadays they're not. The speed of a good PC is beyond that of a Mac for graphics work, and the price is around the same. So: Code: if (macs > pcs) { $the_pope = "jewish"; } else if (pcs > macs) { $the_pope = "hebrew"; } else if (pcs == macs) { $the_pope = "zen buddhist"; } else if (pcs != macs) { $the_pope = "catholic"; } And don't question the code, I know it doesn't REALLY work, it's just to show what I'm saying in a geekish way
they'll run photoshop the same but there's a reason why the music industry and cgi industrys use macs... ...and it isn't because they come in pretty cases *n
dang, all you people just fighting, tisk tisk... (is it just em or does it look like he is waving the middle finger at us.... ) anyways, just go about modding the mac, the only downside i can see from that is that the monitor is only like 15" and only does about 1024x768 a 60 hz or so. otherwise it could be an interesting mod, but definately do something about that beige
As posted here a while back. This is still an ongoing issue and probably always will be (mac vs. pc). But Jethro is working on a mod here. If you don't have any suggestions, ideas, helpful recommendations then zip yer gobs. The official statement so you don't have to link to the other thread... as viable as when it was written then, so shall it be what you live by even today. So it is written, so it will be done or I'll edit your arse. "OK, lemme say a few things here. Community: I posted this because there are some people that have macs and are interested in modding. And since this is the best place on the web for modding, this is where they should come to discuss projects. Fact (and I checked on this): winning a "mac vs. pc" argument will not lower your interest rate on your home or your blood serum cholestoral regardless of which side of the argument you are on. But, even if it did, that discussion would fit better in the General Discussion or maybe the HardWare and Overclocking fourms. Not to mention the argument has been done to death. Modding is Modding: Something that somebody did on a mac project could inspire a PC user with an idea and vice versa (hense my motivation for posting it) Performance: Yes, there are PC's that outperform the G4. But prior to my current PC setup (about 3 months ago) I was on a Celeron 366 and would have eaten six adult worms for a G4 (or any other superior system for that matter). My point is we have people here with a wide range of systems at different performance levels. Bottom line, it doesn't matter. and lastly, Personal: I was not breast fed enough as a child and I tend to lash out at people at inopprotune times to prove that I am a big man. So far I have been remarkably restrained in here because you guys are always helpful and supportive in the modding forum and I almost never have to do anything except nap and take all the credit for a smooth running forum and occasionally poke at Linear with a pointy stick. However, flexing my moderator muscles on this this topic seems like the right thing to do. Fear me, because I am huge and powerful"
