http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAM-SSD64M Like that one or http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/11103...5-SSD-Internal-Solid-State-Drive/Product.html that one. What do you think? Good performance considering it's "only" 90/70 for the Samsung? Those with Agilities - worth buying?? I'm looking for buyers guide recommendations.
quick question... haven't bought the ocz, but was looking at it compared to the g-skill falcon (both are the 64 gb version). here in the states there is about a $20 price difference in favor of the falcon. stats seem identical. any reason to look at the agility despite the $20 price increase? can't find the samsung anywhere in the states unless you buy it in a prebuilt. pqi has a nice option for 32 gb capacity for about $120...seemed to have better performance stats than the agility... sorry to derail your thread, i know you are looking for experiences. i have none yet, just curious on those issues.
i've got a vertex, which looks pretty much identical to the agility from the spec sheet. i'm quite happy with it so far, although i don't really have too much to compare it too. at the same time i got the SSD i also got a quad-core and switched from ext3 to ext4, so i'm not sure how much of my huge performance increase came from what. i certainly don't have any complaints.
The samsung has caught my eye, but mainly because of its asthetics. £100 for 64Gb, i dont know would a pair of WD 640GB Black editions RAID 0 together be a cheaper option?
Really, bloody hell! i might just have to grab one when i can, first i need to get rid of my 32-bit OS bottleneck on this system.
i have the SLC-version of the samsung. Great drive, which really helped my little 12" AMD laptop stay on it's feet when i hammer it a little. Performance is not stellar though, there's not much difference in large file transfer speeds between this and a standard drive, though responsiveness is through the roof, and it provides the laptop with a decidedly more high-end experience. Oh, and i can totally attest to the looks of the thing, it's a stunning piece of hardware to behold
Well typically SSDs have a zero response time, although I'm not sure if the £90 one above has cache to prevent stuttering. Two WDs in RAID will always have a seek and RAID overhead.
i've got the Samsung 64GB. but i've put "Program Data" and "users" folder onto my WD Black, so in the end, the performance of launching Firefox was only a little bit faster than WD Raptor. but in GTA4, the textures sometime flashes due to driving to fast on WD Black, when installed in SSD, it flashes very quickly, barely noticeable
The onboard cache should mean no stutter. Pity the controller chip is a bit lacking on bandwidth. I'd be very tempted to raid-0 a pair. Slightly OT, but I have a Corsair M64 which has higher bandwidth, but barely any cache. As I've used it and piled stuff on, it's not slowed down much, if at all. IE8 is open and ready within a second, as are most programs. Photoshop takes about four seconds to open.
Is the M64 the same as the Samsung drive above?? Hmm. £134 is a nice price. EDIT: M64 is also Jmicron apparently. FAIL.
I *think* they use the newer J-Micron controller - still a minimal amount of cache (something like 64Kb iirc), but I've not experienced stuttering. Certainly no indication of it on atto benchmark or such I've still got to crack mine open linky
Ahh is it the same one Kingston uses on its V-series? It's branded Toshiba and has 64k of cache on chip.
quote from the novatech page for the samsung Features - Onboard 64MB Cache - Samsung Controller EDIT: would also point out that the agility is a bit cheaper from scan.co.uk http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1053333 although they quote Read:185 MB/s Write:100 MB/s the vertex is also cheaper http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/30GB...TA-3Gb-s-200MB-s-Read-and-160MB-s-Write-speed and that quotes Read:230 MB/s Write:135 MB/s Out of the OCZ drives i know which my money would go on
