Probably the wisest choice, as I'm doing the same, not for the refresh but rather for the new coolers that would come out. I guess getting a Prolimtech Meglahem for Christams is in order.
Did this sorta thing ever happen with previous GPU's and do you think it will continue with future releases as die shrinks happen?
nah, it's mostly TSMC's cock-up backing things up. On ATI's side failure to plan ahead, and on the other hand with Nvidia just their latest shipment of fail so far.
Sure to overcome this ati done the die shrink for the 4770's. Guess that wasn't far enough ahead then =/ Only 58xx are mentioned in the article. Hows the 57xx holding out out of interest?
I just decided to bite the bullet. I ordered a sapphire 5870 even though it's hopelessly out of stock, but i decided i didn't want to wait for the december prices.
Pretty much, I was willing to buy the ICE-Q if only because I knew I wasn't going to upgrade anytime soon,
It's certainly not the first time. I remember ages ago when the x1950xtx's came out, it took me ages to find a store which had one in stock. Well over a month, if I recall. I can't say I remember what the problem was that time, but having a new graphics card everybody wants and nobody can find isn't an unheard-of problem. *sigh* I was gonna pull the trigger on one of these this Christmas. Wonder if I'll be able to by then? -Tuthmose
Heard rumours the 5970 is out for reviewers. Could production of those cards have someting to do with lack of dies about?
i dont know if this is what your looking for but i found these on novatech (they were in stock when i found them don't know if they are now http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Graphics-ATI/ATIHD5800Series/
While most people can't get standard 5870s CyberPower have some PowerColor LCS watercooled 5870s right now: There's a thread on it in their forums Only available on new builds though
Dabs has a couple of 5850's for just under £200, a good £20 cheaper than anywhere else. Yeah, I know they're not in stock, but my finger is hovering over the buy button and not having used Dabs before I was wondering if they'll actually keep to those prices or not as they're only on pre-order. Is it worth a punt?
They sometimes try to do that, but the truth is they cant. You have an agreement, they cant back out that easily. One shop tried to pull that trick on me for a laptop once, i'm still pissed. I think i posted 7 angry reviews all over the place
Oh I remember the good old days where you would just buy a 9500 pro and unlock the extra pipelines! And what good are new graphics cards if they never ship any? Just bought a 4890 and I'm chuffed!
IIRC it was the 64MB 9500 non pro with the L-shaped memory layout that could be unlocked. I'm sure I have one in a spares box here somewhere...
