I know that technically, all the signal wires are the same, and I'm using short runs so signal strength is no issue, can I just cut the side of the connector so it will fit and do the same with SATA power plugs?

It should, I've done this same sort of thing before.

Thanks a bunch, got a review to write tonight. This obviates a really expensive set of cables.

Apparently, the drives won't initialize this way. there are extra connectors on the top of the plug, of all things...

Have to e-mail seller, ask which cables.

I thought that was optional. I remember having to knock out the edge of a SAA cable and power connector in the past to connect a drive.
But if you need it, you need it.

Out of curiosity, what type of connector is being used on the SAS card?

If it were the other type of SAS connector I might have been able to get you a cable.
It's weird that the drive is not working, I'm pretty sure the extra pins are for a second phy so you can run the drive in wide mode. But maybe the drive won't run in narrow mode for some reason.

Yeah, those cables are hard to get, and rather expensive.

Any other tests I can try to make sure the drives are OK?
