    I want to host a small homepage, mainly for testing, not heavy bandwidth. I think NTL dont allow it and block port 80, but could i say use port 81? And could i point a domain to it directly?

    Cheers

    on your on pc??

    well ntl tell you youre not allowed, but then again as long as they dont catch you, you cant do anythin wrong...

    i know someone who used to run a ftp server with ntl...twas fine aslong as traffic aint too big...

    OK thanks.
    Il use IIS or Apache probably, and just set a different port. And run the no-ip.org thing so it automatically updates when i change ip :)

    Just make sure you don't get maaaaad downloads and they wont really mind. at the end of the day it's your connection and they understand that they cant really restrict you too much to avoid bad press. I spoke to one of the BT guys about serving on ADSL and he said a blind eye is turned unless there is abuse...I'm not sure how to define abuse as with a 256k upload limit i can't quite serve for Amazon yet...:rolleyes:

    Make sure you reconfigure the ports as most ISP scan for 21/80 etc as mine does, if they catch you a couple of times they may force you to upgrade to business tariff.

    Freedom2Surf are very good about thrashing the connection.

    Regarding restrictions on the service;
    I run an FTP server 24/7 with about 4-7 clients connected at any one time so it's always maxed out and I've never been warned. They'll just go bankrupt that's all :D

    phrozen, you can do it, just use another port.

    but if you only want to test your scripts ect, why not just use the server locally?

    Remeber though, that Broadband is favourable to downloading rather than uploading, so the connection people get to your site won't be as good as your download speeds.
