Wanting to put an old AM2 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ into a smaller mATX motherboard, so wondering if new AM3 motherboards will take it?

I know I can just get an AM2 mobo from ebay, but it'll just be nice to buy it new.

nope, the athlon processor uses ddr2, the am3 board had ddr3. Just get a newer dual core Athlon, there like $60, and can work in am2 boards.

    Read the compatibility section

It's also a different socket, AM3 has 938 pins where as AM2/AM2- has 941 even though Am3 CPU's are backwards compatable the boards are not
