I'm 99.9% sure the answer is 'no', but I thought I would just check it's not hackable. My Wireless router died and I've just inherited this ADSL router from a friend. It's a Netgear DG834G ADSL modem router. I was just wondering if I can somehow connect the WAN rj45 (from the separate NTL modem) through one of the LAN ports on the router. Please help - Until I get this sorted, I can't use my laptop or my xbmc. Enough to make a geek cry :'(
Umm my NTL modem is hooked up to a router with an ethernet cable (cat5e RJ45). If the router has a WAN port, it should work fine. If it doesn't have a dedicated WAN port, plug it into either the first or last port. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.
Hmmm, that's an interesting idea. If only my onboard NIC hadn't died (no free PCI slots). Guess I'll eBay the ADSL router and get a non-ADSL one. In my googling, I did find something called OpenWRT - essentially this is open-source firmware for the 'WRT' series of routers. This would actually do exactly what I want, but it's not available for my router model, as far as I can tell.
£20-£30 should get your a 4 port Ethernet router + WAN Ethernet port to connect to your cable modem. Even Maplin charge only £29.99 for one. Other people must offer a router for less as Scan can offer an ADSL-Router (ie with built in ADSL modem rather than the WAN port you need) for only £17.61 LN18962! PS eg Thursday special on scan.co.uk "Edimax BR-6104K Router 4x10/100 Ports Firewall/NAT UPnP Support (Modem Required) £15.26 inc"
