I'm 99.9% sure the answer is 'no', but I thought I would just check it's not hackable.

My Wireless router died and I've just inherited this ADSL router from a friend. It's a Netgear DG834G ADSL modem router. I was just wondering if I can somehow connect the WAN rj45 (from the separate NTL modem) through one of the LAN ports on the router.

Please help - Until I get this sorted, I can't use my laptop or my xbmc. Enough to make a geek cry :'(

Umm my NTL modem is hooked up to a router with an ethernet cable (cat5e RJ45). If the router has a WAN port, it should work fine. If it doesn't have a dedicated WAN port, plug it into either the first or last port.

    Unless I'm misunderstanding something.

no, it needs to have a dedicated WAN port. It can't route otherwise, sorry.

I thought that would be the case. No hacks?

The only way round is to use a PC with two NICs as a router then use the ADSL router as a switch

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea. If only my onboard NIC hadn't died (no free PCI slots). Guess I'll eBay the ADSL router and get a non-ADSL one.

In my googling, I did find something called OpenWRT - essentially this is open-source firmware for the 'WRT' series of routers. This would actually do exactly what I want, but it's not available for my router model, as far as I can tell.

£20-£30 should get your a 4 port Ethernet router + WAN Ethernet port to connect to your cable modem. Even Maplin charge only £29.99 for one.

Other people must offer a router for less as Scan can offer an ADSL-Router (ie with built in ADSL modem rather than the WAN port you need) for only £17.61 LN18962!

    PS
    eg Thursday special on scan.co.uk
"Edimax BR-6104K Router 4x10/100 Ports Firewall/NAT UPnP Support (Modem Required) £15.26 inc"
