Hi, I am having trouble installing an OS on my computer. Heres the deal though. It will install windows media 2005 edition no problem. If i try to install windows server 2003 or windows XP pro x64 bit it copies the drivers over and when it tries to start it bsod on me. While giving me a message of check your hard drives for bad connections, virus's , and to run chkdisk if problem still persists. I have tried with two different hard drives and with no hard drive in at all, and still same message. The media CD still works and has no problem installing. Maybe it is that my setup has newer drivers that are on the disk. Thanks for any help. It is a dell xps 410 nothing is different other then i put a 8600gt nvidea card in it.

Do you have a 64-bit processor in it? Pentium 4's aren't, but Core 2 Duos are.

If you don't have a 64-bit CPU, it won't understand a sh!t of the instructions what the OS will send to it and you'll get a BSOD.

Are you sure the install media is 100% ok, if possible try them on another system to see if thats the problem or your computer.

My guess you need to install the sata drivers.

I will try the sata drivers. If I can find them.

EDIT* I can't find them in anything other then an *.exe extension. I'm not sure if it will work, and im on limited blank cd's, since my computer doesn't have a floppy drive thats out of the question.

Can you get your hands on any other OS, Vista or any Linux distro? If one OS installed fine but the others won't it seems a little peculiar to me.

You say that the install disk copies the installation files over fine, but are you sure the files have been copied over fine? i think that they could be some sort of error here causing the BSOD.

You say here that the Windows Server 2003 works fine, do you still get the BSOD using this OS?

If it is something to do with drivers you could also use a program like nlite to put all your necessary drivers into the XP install CD already as well as slipstream all the updates, patches & hot fixes.

I know this might seem weird but i remember one time i was installing XP on this one system i had built and for the love of god it couldn't get the install past the part where it loads all the files for the copying of the installation and it turned out to be the DVD drive, i swapped it out with another one and it worked fine no problem.

    EDIT:
Check out this i was googling and i came up with this this guy is has the same BSOD error as you and he changed the drive from a SATA one to a IDE and it worked.
