A bit random, but some of the people I work with have been chatting in different accents for a bit of fun. So far we have the classics: Scottish, welsh, Irish, the good old Brummy, Liverpuddly, Cockney Then it has developed into Geordie, quoting Byker Grove, "Ah Jeff" "Spuggy!" Jamacian. and then it came to a difficult one, can you do a Jamacian/Geordie accent??? We have tried this and its either or, there is no inbetween. Strange that.
Actually, even though I am danish, I have a hard time producing that proper "danglish" accent. My english mostly sounds like some sort of Atlantic accent. Mix of british and american.
Not intentionally when forced, but apparently sometimes I slip into a Irish accent which is convincing...
I can do quite a few, but not many of the ones I'd really like to. I can do a pretty passable French (speaking french too), German, Yorkshire, Swedish/Norge, Highland Scottish, Glaswegian, Jamaican. Can't do Scouse, Geordie, Brummie or Welsh though; can't do SA or non-whimsical Irish either. Out of the ones I can't do I'd love to be able to do South African, it sounds awesome.
In my youth, I had what I called a "transparent" accent. ie. I could mimic anyone talking to me for more than a couple of minutes. In high school German, my teacher swore blind I was from Cologne (I think that's where the language tapes the school used came from). In my first job, a guy from Belfast started. Within 30 minutes I could understand him perfectly, but no-one else could understand me! As Flibblebot says above, A Welsh "Valleys" accent is very tricky, you have to really concentrate or it just degenerates into Apu from the Simpsons. <Apu>Thank you, come again! </Apu>
I can do Indian (no ****! ) British American German (sometimes exaggerated) Russian (sometimes exaggerated) Pirate I remember my first week at university, nearly every one I met was asking me if I was British. I don't think people realize that a few Indians also speak English
I understand my father did that, though he did it completely unintentionally, and got in some hot water on occasion. I can do a few accents but have always struggled with Scottish. Recently I've been having trouble with my Russian which I haven't had before, instead sounding like a Godfather-esque Marlon Brando. I'm also completely unable to say Pendine - as in the Welsh town/Pendine Sands without sounding like an Irishman saying "pin down".
I can't hold accents at all... I've tried it and gone between british, southern, australian, and even GERMAN in the same sentence.
Transparent accent, though I'm often accused of being South African, but as a bonus I can do almost any voice I want (even having conversations with myself for comedic effect...)
