    Hi,

Is it possible to buy gear which would connect a laptop wirelessly to an external 56k modem.

Ie: if I was sat in my bedroom and I wanted to surf, I could connect wirelessly through to the modem downstairs which would dial to the net.

I know this is possible with a cable modem as a cable modem is permanently connected but is it possible with a normal 56k'er

Yes, a 56k connection can be shared, normally by using Internet Connection Sharing (built into windows from win98 and upwards). However this does mean that the computer with the modem attached must be switched on.

I thought a PC would be required to be connected to the modem.

You can get a IRDA modem (infrared)
But you would still need to be with-in 20ft.

OR you can use a cheap server style PC connected to the modem, and use wireless networking.

Thanks for the info. Discussed it thru with my m8 who was interested.

Have almost persuaded him he'd be better off going broadband anyway.

it aint worth it man...there's no benefit of going "wireless" at 56k....where's the joy of even using the word "wireless' when you tell a friend you have a home network!?!?! :)

It was my friend who was wanting to remote connect to his modem around the house (I use broadband).

He's looking at buying a laptop and wanted to be able to surf in different rooms of house.

Makes more sense to me to do it with ADSL but what can I say...
