for any Canadians on this forum that care about your internet connection please go here -> http://openmedia.ca/meter and sign the petition. What they are doing to internet is atrocious and needs to be stopped. If this breaks the rules in someway feel free to remove this as i don't want to incur the wrath of the ban hammer. For those not in the loop. Starting march 1st in Canada all dsl internet connections will be capped at 25GB per month with additional bandwidth costing potentially a great deal. This is also force all the third party isp's to essentially become resellers for the incumbents which in my opinion is anti-competitive, put's Canadian broadband in an even worse state and should be illegal. For those not living in Canada (i know there's a lot of you here) if you feel like it you can sign it as well and help out the numbers and pray none of your isp's decide to follow suit. Imagine your internet costs doubling (almost) over night and being limited to 25GB per month before getting hit with overages.
put it this way the fastest and highest capped internet connection i can get here is 50Meg Downstream 2Meg Upstream 175GB Data Cap for $99.99 +$4.50 modem rental fee +13% tax Comes out to around $115 CDN or 71 GBP. If you gover the 175 then it maxes out at an additional $50 cdn. It's freaking retarded here.
Is that per month?! I get a supposedly unlimited cap on 16Mb/1Mb for £7.50/month. I don't go mad, but I don't hold back.
per month . The best plan i could find before that that was affordable was 5m/800k with 200GB for around $35 a month but now with this UBB (Usage Based Billing) that 200GB is now 25. And it's only a 5m down 800k up. Welcome to Canada the place the internet forgot.
Welcome to Canada folks. 0 competition on the IPS market Yes, we have a mighty choice of 2 providers (one on cable, and the other on DSL), but they working together. CRTC basically is saying that competition is bad for business, and will destroy the internet. 2 choices is already pushing the series of tubes already.
Isn't your main ISP, which is effectively complaining about the extent of video streaming and VOD services, also the ISP which sells TV services? From an anti-competitive perspective, I'm not sure ISP's should be allowed to become content providers.
Summation of all internet services and price in Canada (can be -5-10$ between plans service with the exchange of no virtually tech support (long down time, several hours waiting on the phone, etc..) http://www.videotron.com/service/internet-services/internet-access So let's what we have: 3Mbps with 4GB cap - 29$/month 8Mbps with 40GB cap - 40$/month 15Mbps with a 70GB cap - 56$/month 120Mbps with a 170GB cap - 150$/month Please note that all caps are shared with download and upload.
Yes, But it's worse than that. The 2 big incumbants are Bell canada and Rogers Communication. Both companies offer the following services. Not mention they also own some of the networks as well. Television Internet Home Phone Cellualar Phone and Wireless Internet All at disgusting prices. If someone were to get all 4 from from either provider one would expect to pay anywhere from 170 to over $300 per month. It is truly disgusting. If you went with the average rates on average you would pay around the following. Internet $50+Tax Cable $65+tax SmartPhone - $60+$7.95+$1.50 HomePhone - $35 Total = $250 and that's all with average plans nothing fancy and the internet would be capped at around 60-80GB, cable is what's called vip cable so some specialty channels but nothing to write home about. Smart phone plan would have around a 500mb-1GB data plan with around 200 daytime minutes, home phone would be with 1 or 2 features. Welcome to Bell/Rogers here's your astroglide for a smoother transition. oh and the closest we get to FTTH is actually FTTN the last mile is still copper.
This is madness, I really feel sorry for you. I wonder if this is enough to have a knock-on effect for business's which make their money online in Canada. I wouldn't be feeling too happy if I were running an online shop in Canada right now.
ahh but here you go it only applies to residential internet (currently) business/enterprise connections are excempt but that could easily change. and yes if i was a business owner i would be extremly pissed. More so if i were a third party ISP.
That's atrocious! They work out to about 2-4 times dearer than the UK. You can pay £6.49 for up to 20Mb with a 10GB cap (midnight - 8am unlimited/no cap) from Plusnet.
Also keep in mind that the data caps we have are for the entire month they don't get turned off during certain times of the day.
I wonder if my ISP is doing this. I have MTS internet. They have limits set on their website but I always go over them and never get charged.
That will depend on if MTS owns the infrastructure in Manitoba or if they are buying access from bell and are a wholesaler. Basically if bell own's the infrastructure you will get hosed. If not then probably not...yet.
Someone worked out that it was cheaper to buy a 200gb SSD, fill it with stuff and then send it through the post to someone. Wish I could find the image for it now
Good news everyone (well Canadians). No the internet is not magically affordable: BUUUUUUTT: http://twitter.com/pmharper/status/32526091855863808 http://openmedia.ca/news/liberals-come-out-against-internet-metering-petition-passes-200k
Spent a lot of time in Hamilton, On so I have signed. Hope this gets repealed/stopped from ever happening.
