    Hey all,

Trying to fix a friend's computer. It runs on our hall network which is connected to the internet. The connection has been tested with a laptop and works fine, so it's definitely a client-side problem.

He is running Win XP Home Edition SP2

Steps I've taken to try and fix the problem:

    - Uninstalled and reinstalled the network card.
    - Repaired the connection.
    - Checked settings - everything is set to automatically obtain IP address.
    - Run Safe Mode with Networking to check there isn't a software problem.
    - Ensured all internet settings are correct.

The internet doesn't work in IE or Firefox, and software that uses the internet cannot connect, e.g. Messenger.

I'm tearing my hair out, none of the usual fixes work and he made no changes to the system before the problem started happening - it seems the problem happened immediately after installing the SWAT 3 demo, and a virus scan found 3 viruses in the JRE.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    AH

Besides throwing the Pc in the trash, try the networking wizard. It's under "setup a home or small office network" in 'my network places'. That always gets me up & running :thumb:

My brother had this problem yesterday. I just said to him be patient and wait as MS is just stupid sometimes. Anyway after half hour watching tv he went to his pc and then his internet connection appeared and started working.

Before that his pc was like what you stated. It wasnt picking up the ip my router is suposed to of given him and could not see the network.

Just got to wait a few hours after a fresh install for the network connection to start working. Dont ask me why but its just like that sometimes with MS.

If it doesnt work, well your friend isnt missing much :)

If it happens after instaling swat then just dont instll swat especially if your virus checker finds 3 viruses in it.

Also I have never installed a demo since the days of the 486 as demos messed your computer up so much and caused endless re-installs as they never completley un-installed. I hate demos and stay away from them as they are so buggy.

    Theres your answer. :)

Nope, fraid not. I've tried running netsetup.exe as smoguzbenjamin suggested. The viruses are not attributable to SWAT 3, but it appears that the installation of the SWAT3 demo was the cause of the internet problems.

    ?
The virii were found in jre, the end-user java runtime directory, I guess, not in the demo. :)

I've never had a problem with a game demo!

Have the router settings been tampered with, I wonder? Is it set to give out enough ip's to cover everyone connecting to it?

Is Zonealarm installed? I know I had to reconfigure a couple after an update the other day.

If you have a winxp install disk you can try reinstalling tcp/ip, that's what it sounds like got hosed up.
