    Righty, I'm trying to move an avi file into a subfolder, and I get this;

    ...but I'm certain there aren't any apps open using that file?!

    I've had this before, and while I know just waiting 10 minutes is the simplest option (for me anyway), I thought I'd finally get down to finding out why this happens, and see if there's a way of listing the app/person acessing the file (I can't see why it doesn't just tell you in the first place, rather than just stating it's in use...)

    Would appreciate some guidance...

    Well, the first thing I'd do is run hi-jack this or some other app that can tell the forum exactly what is running at the time that windows does not let you move the file. When I encounter this errror, it usually comes from one of two causes, 1) I actually have a program, fully accesable using the file, or 2) I have a process running that I cant see (think hidden system tray icon- especially with icon hiding on).

    Try using Unlocker. It was designed specifically to overcome the problem you're having:

    Ooh, that's perfect Hazardous - cheers for that! :thumb:

    Colonel Sanders: great suggestion, but Hazardous provided a link, and I'm too lazy to Google "hi-jack this"...thanks anyway :D

    Having the 'preview' panel enabled in Windows Explorer sometimes causes this.
