I purchsased a EOS 1200D just before christmas and it seemed really good but when my wife tries to take close ups of her guinea pigs it really struggles to focus.

I know hair/fur is difficult to focus on but even trying to focus on a angled object at the same focal length it seems to struggle.

There are several auto focus options is one beter than the others at close up focusing or is there something else I'm doing wrong?

You're not trying to focus closer than the lens will allow are you?

My wife reckons she's taking photo's about 10-12 inches away with I believe a 18-55 lense.

Minimum focusing distance is about 45cm iirc for the 18-55. I'd suggest getting a bit further away, then zooming in.
