On my dads laptop i cant get into my computer, to acces teh C drive or cd drive or anything like that. I have to type in C:\ to get to it. other than a reformat of windows how can i fix this. O and this error comes up very frequently: svchost.exe-Application Error The instruction at "0x009b6f9a" referenced memory at "0x00000000". the memory could nopt be "written". Is the error and my problem connected. my dad is not smart enough to type C:\ every time so how do i fix this. thanks for the help pillow
Have you tried doing a system restore to before the time this started happening...i'm assuming you have xp as you didnt say and its not in you sig........ I have also messaged you a link to an error whch sounds very similiar i think its something to do with software which tries to connect to the net when its run but cant due to a lack of a connection or it being blocked from connecting for whatever reason.
I would say your best bet is reinstalling windows. svchost.exe is a system process....and when system porcesses get messed with, your whole system just goes downhill from there, caused possibly by a virus...
yes system restore would/could work if this was just a software issue. But if it is a virus issue, system restore probably wont do anything to your problem. But, being that we dont know the source of the problem, try the system restore, but be ready to reinstall if it doenst work.
I would also reformat. Sometimes viruses, spyware and the like (which might well be installed if your dad is inexperienced with computers) can really go quite deeply into an operating system and cause a lot of damage. They can be very hard to get rid of and leave a lot of junk lying around even when "removed" by programs. My advice is to back everything up, reformat, buy a copy of NOD32 and install Microsoft Anti-Spyware and then explain to your dad how to use them.
tried a system restore, did not work. edit: since we are out of town right now, and my aunts house does not have wireless like our home this could be the problem. now that im in chicago and in a hotel with wireless ill try it now. edit: problem still occurs
then in that case, when you get home, reformat and reinstall windows after you back up all of the files you still want to keep. Then, once you reinstall everything, I would suggest getting some antivirus and spyware remover. here are some decent suggestions (all are free): AVG Avast antivitus and for spyware: Adaware and if you want a better firewall than the windows firewall:Zone Labs, Zone alarm firewall all of these are really easy to use and are very reliable. I myself use AVG, adaware, and zone alram and I have not had a virus yet and only minimal spyware. Hope this helps
since the laptop is my dads and its property of the U. of I. he will ask his technician about it. Those guys messed up my moms laptop too. i got a laptop from them once and it was messed up similar to this laptop until i reinstalled windows. They instal all these wierd wireless programs that dont work. thanks for the help. peace
