Having a little inside knowledge here at bit, the companies are more bothered about the amount of times an ad is actually displayed rather than how many times it is clicked - which is the complete opposite to how things used to work (remember everywhere had those Crucial pay-per-click banners?).

It's not that it's hard to to install, it's that it's damm near impossible to get rid of once you've decided you hate it! :wallbash:

Well as far as how many times its displayed its a sales tactic as well....Most people who say know 5 times to the same question in a row are *if memory serves me right* 60% more likely to say yes on the 6th time. Same holds true to banners...Eventually it will perk your interest....

Unfortunately- I think you're close. The real use I've seen for these pop-up ads is to lure gullible (read, your grandparents) people into clicking on the ads- at which point they recieve several tracker cookies. (spyware) This malware proceeds to illegaly track every internet action of the user. By processing the most visited sites, habits, where they purchase goods- companies spreading the trackers can sell information to retailers or web domain owners, who can then tailor their offerings. Or so the reasoning goes.

IMO that's all pop-ups do anymore. No respectable advertising takes place on them anymore. If it ever did.

In any case- I use firebird. what pop-ups?

IE plus Free Surfer mk II over here, and absolutely no pop-ups. Lets see, so far this month Free Surfer has killed.... 1055 pop-ups.... Good figure :p I really don't mind advertising as a whole, so long as it doesn't take away from the look of something (like say your going for an underworld type look on your website, why in gods name would you have a pop-up for "happy kittie stuff half price"?!?!?)
