I'm trying to upgrade my friends PC a little after his old gpu died.

I have installed a brand new GT 610(he doesn't play games) and upgraded him from 2gb to 4gb of ram (DDR2 800mhz), also added two new fans as his were well loud and will probably stick a better cooler in if it will fit.

I have kindly been given an E8400 by Arboreal to replace his lowly E2160 cpu but I need to upgrade from the F3 bios to the F9 bios.

I have downloaded the correct one from Gigabyte but every time I try and update with Qflash I just get the message, Bios ID check error and it stops trying to update.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

    His board is a GA-P31-DS3L.

Crappy, are you using Qflash through the BIOS (hit the END key on startup I think) or via Windows?

No one got any ideas, in a bit of a time crunch as it's my friends only pc and I have had it for nearly a week and was hoping to give it back tomorrow.

Is it AmiBIOS? If so, you can get a Windows tool which will rewrite the whole BIOS - I'm sure I saw a similar issue on an ASUS board.

    It's Award

I've always been a little wary of window bios utilities as the only time I've ever used one it bricked my mother's mobo.

Humm - never done an Award one in Windaz, but I think I'd give it a go in Safe mode. Else, could you get a chip from eBay?

Not sure what to do know, really don't want to kill his now working pc.

A chip from ebay is an option but I don't really want to spend any more on a ten year old pc.

I'll add these pics here in case in helps

I'd probably have a crack at the windows tool. But I'm an idiot

Is there a different revision of the motherboard? If so, try that.

Secondly, you only need F6 for Yorkie chips. Start there failing everything else. :)

    Edit

Seems it didn't like the 2 previous USB sticks I was trying, changed to a brand new one and it flashed straight away.

    Go figure, grrrrrrr.

They might have been formatted incorrectly. I forgot about that. I'm glad you've fixed it. :)

I did check to see if they were FAT which they were but I think they were both bootable at one time so I don't know if that made any difference.

Me too - and on reflecting on it, I think I've had the same issue in the past!

Good news, perseverance paid off:thumb: The E8400 rides again! Glad I could help

In other news, my LAN buddy has killed his Z77 mobo and HD 7870, so your friend's not alone.
My spare mobo (Q67) won't run Ivy CPUs, so he can't test his i5K to see if it's alive or try his 'new' Radeon 270x from Gumtree

Pc was running lovely and quiet (for 80mm and 92mm fans), loaded it into the car on the back seat, get to his house, hook it all up and suddenly the front 120mm fan is making a racket ffs.

Seems like I might need to replace that one now too :(.

Thanks again Arboreal, I have officially thanked you on my wanted thread :)

    That's really nice of you.

I was going to give him an old hiper one , I have here but I booked it up to a PSU and that's a bit rattley and whiny so not much use.

If your happy to send one that would be great.

I'll pm you in the morning if that's ok.

    Cheers
