My apologies for another one of these threads; I just sent this email to our Uni head of catering. It's self explanatory really.

    Dear Mr S,

I was in the Engineering Cafe, where I spend a lot of time working group projects and sampling the food and coffee here. I was saddened today when I was told off for trying to microwave a simple Cornish Pasty for a mid morning breakfast after my 2 hour lecture.

The kind lady explained to me that it was a health and safety decree and that I should raise the issue with you. I'm just wondering why a pasty bought in a well known shop, that I'm sure sells plenty of pasties without anything untoward occurring, might be deemed unsafe to put in a microwave on UoB premises.

If this is a problem with not wanting to mix outside food with safe food, then could it be possible to install a second microwave for students to use? In a similar fashion to t the Faculty Workshop, we could have training sessions and our name put on a register to make sure we've satisfied the staff that we can use the machine tools safely.

    My apologies for the grumpiness,
    Yours hungrily,

    Mr T

    Lol! thats ridiculous

Unless its like one of those industrial microwaves used in catering

but if you had access to it then it would be a normal one and why would you not be able to use it :S

You mad? I use microwaves every day to heat frozen veg - there's nothing wrong with them and they are an essential item of every modern kitchen!

    Get used to it.

At work I have no immediate access to either boiling water or any cooking appliances; citing health and safety concerns.

If I want a cup of tea, I have to ask kitchen staff for one to be made for me; likewise if I want something personal heated up on the hob/microwave/grill etc.

Under no circumstances am I, or any employee of this company; to lift the 35cm x 35cm x 35cm document archiving boxes we use, as they are 'too heavy and could cause injury...'

Oh the times that we live in.

That is copied verbatim (except real names of course)...and here's the reply:

    Dear Mr T,
Thanks for your email. We have many people asking this question... The
simple answer is that we as a food operation are responsible for all food
that we sell from our businesses.
If people start using our equipment to heat up their own food and in the
process then contaminate our food, then we being responsible for our food,
then become responsible to the outcomes of potential contaminated food.
For your information, the pasty you bought from a well known shop will not
be safe to microwave in our cafe. This is due to the fact you probably will
not have kept the product below the safe temperature of 8 degrees between
purchase and putting it in our microwave, thus allowing bacteria to form,
so then potentially contaminating our equipment. Regarding a second
microwave we cannot allow this as we would not be able to guarantee people
us the correct microwave for the different activities.
At this point my only suggestion to you is to speak to someone in your
department and ask if they can buy a microwave for your common room.
Hope this answers all your questions.
    Kind regards
    Mr S

Touche is all I can say (and I did)

That's b****s, the point of microwaving stuff is that it kills bacteria. Why else does one heat **** up....

^If they like to eat food really hot instead of cold and cba waiting for a oven cook ;) *insert troll face here*.

But.. yeah agreed this is BS. Uni's are really bad for this kind of thing but at the end of the day even though you pay a retarded amount of money to use it, it is their equipment = their rules.

huh, strange. At my current school we have a microwave in several of the student lounges. At my former school there was a microwave right in the cafeteria for anyone to use.....

they all get cleaned daily by the kitchen/cafeteria staff.... doesn't seem to cause issues here.

Touché indeed, there are some pretty serious legal issues about cold food so it makes perfect sense.

    Was this in QB?

It's a natural selection process - it took me too long to figure out how to use it so the lady noticed and stopped me. Otherwise what would they've done, taken away my warmed pasty? :waah:

Yep QB! I'm gonna push for another microwave placed outside the cafe for students to use at their own risk. Luckily we've just elected our student staff representatives :naughty:

Sounds like a plan! They could just put another one elsewhere in the JCR, I doubt catering's responsibility extends beyond Cafe Resource.
