I watched the first episode of Caprica and thought it was terrible, I'll spoiler the rest of my thoughts:

It seemed to me the writers were aiming for a younger audience, trying to hit on those that weren't born when they original was made. It felt like I was watching a teen-angst soap with very minor references to future tech. I was not impressed.

However, then I watched part 2 of the pilot and I was pleasantly surprised:

Part 2 seemed to bring much more to the table. Yeah it was cheesy! But that's what you get when you turn a great classic into a teen-drama. The kids annoy the hell outa-me to be frank. The robot sequences were well done and I hope they make a great deal more of those, start cloning the robot, more fear factor. In fact the scene where the robot collapses at the fathers feet reminded me of Frankenstein. The creator and his soon-to-be genocidal killing machine ... very apt.

I am looking forward to part 3 whenever that may arrive, but like Flash Forward, I do wonder where they will take it, whether it'll hold my interest and whether or not I will feel robbed if I ever reach the final episode ...

    Battle Star Skins.
(Skins) Caprica is a teen drama that follows a group of teenagers in (Bristol) the fictional Battlestar Galactica universe, through the (two years of sixth form) crazy virtual rave party digital clone madness.....

I have only seen the first episode so far though!

For those that have not seen Skins.. I don't recommend it, the first episode of Caprica did remind me of this though :S

I'm kind of liking the show, or at least the first few episodes. I don't think it's as slow as SGU, but it could definitely use a lot more action.

I wasn't too happy with the last episode. I can see some decent writing went into it, but I guess I'm too old to enjoy teen dramas. I think I'll be giving it a miss from now on. I've still got the newer Battlestar Galactica series to start watching, I got as far watching the pilot, enjoyed it, so I'll see where that takes me.

Loving this so far, Much better than the redone battlestar, its more enjoyable for all to watch rather than a hardcore sci fi,

Also Skins is some of the best british writing in years.

Like some strange drug I find I am unable to stop watching this series ...

    Some more complaints though ...

    1) I hate the word FRAK and they use it as every other word in most sentences ... either use the proper thing or leave it out!! I find it's over-use completely unnecessary. In fact if they left it out completely no one would miss it, it appears like the writer has got some strange OCD-like attraction to add as many as possible.

    2) {self censored due to hurting the feelings of liberty and human rights activists}

    3) Cutesy teenage girlies, school-girl crushes, flowers and fields of green grass ... followed by drug references, alcohol problems, violence and blood-shed, excessive swearing (even if the words are wrapped up in a fluffy FRAK cocoon) ... the show is like some mixed-up teen who doesn't know whether to be fully grown-up or stay in the realm of fantasy and protected by a thinly veiled attempt at self-censorship.

    4) Immature girls running around like schoolers at a hormone riddled school disco, gurning over the garage mechanic ... no thanks. I'd rather see the robot dismember him.

... but I'll still watch next weeks episode ...

Tbh, watching the new BSG and then caprica, it's rather making me want to watch the original series, to try and piece it all together properly... It'd be rather epic if they did remake the first cylon war though..

So should sex, drugs, war, violence, and any other adult themes. They're all totally unnecessary. Or perhaps just grow up a little and recognise that smoking is something many people do, and so has a place in television?

I want to give this show a go as I love new BSG but it's a weird spin off with little actually BSG for me.

Might free up sometime but doubt I will

Ok. Firstly, your personal opinion is fine. You can have whichever one you want. If you express that opinion in a public forum though, you can't reasonably expect it not to be criticised.

Secondly, in fact I would be fine with the legal sale of currently illegal drugs. People have the right to make their own decisions, even if I believe they are making poor ones.

Thirdly, smoking in film and television is there because it reflects the way society is. Yes, we could have media which only reflected the way society should be, but then it wouldn't fulfill the roles that the majority of people want media to fulfill - it would be effectively be propaganda. Your (presumably bad) long term experience of smoking cannabis doesn't automatically mean you are correct and everyone else who hasn't smoked weed for 20 years is wrong. Fine, you made a bad choice. Some people enjoy smoking weed, or tobacco, or taking whatever. That's fine too.

You appear to be reading the portrayal of smoking as encouragement for people to smoke. Do you then agree that the portrayal of gangsterism in countless gangster movies is encouragement for people to embark on lives of organised crime? Or that the countless murders and kills in movies are encouragement to go out and kill? Maybe you do. But that doesn't give anyone the right to censor others. In a free society we have the right to freedom of expression. Some people might do stupid things as a result of that, but at some point responsibility needs to be taken by the individual.

And finally, I wasn't trying to pick a fight, I was attempting to briefly point the (absurd) logical conclusion of your point of view. Evidently that failed, hence all of the above.

You're not allowing for the possibility that the creators of the show simply wanted it that way, that they felt that made the show better. Whether you agree with their decision or not is irrelevant, they have the right to create art (in the broadest possible definition) as they see fit.

As for attraction of reaching for a cigarette increases if the viewer sees one on screen, so what? Jesus, it's on TV so you must do it? Take some responsibility. You're an adult, if you want to do it, do it. If not, don't. Simple.

You still haven't replied as to whether murder on TV is encouragement to murder, but with your repeated restatement of the presence of cigarettes on a show as encouragement to smoke, I can't help but feel that you must actually believe that murder shouldn't be on TV as it would encourage murders, or if not that you're simply being inconsistent.

I do not support tobacco companies. Nor do I support companies which produce weapons if I see a war movie, or if I protest when someone says that such a movie should be censored because it's bad for me. You have no right to tell me what I can and can not be exposed to, it's my life, it's my choice. If you don't like that, fine, but banning something because you don't like it, that's impacting upon my life without my consent, and is wrong.

Reformed smokers are always the funniest to listen to/ read, few other groups can summon such vitriol regarding a subject they were once involved in.

I'm afraid i agree with spec, regardless of your or any ones views smoking is currently legal, if one hasn't the will power to watch something on TV with out being attracted to that object then one probably shouldn't have a TV or go out side there are worse things going on out there than Smoking.

You drink AshT? There is another very dangerous drug with very few redeeming features but its quite regularly featured on the evils box.
