So I finally got myself a nice first car, a peogeot 306, 1.4, 5dr, LX with AC. Heres a pic:

Now the problem is car insurance!

Ecar insurance is the cheapest at £900 ish but i dont really want to go with them because they are all internet-email based and would rather talk to someone.
Endsleigh are the second cheapest around £985.00 - any one able to recommend any good insurance companys for first time buyers? This is with third party fire and theft at the moment.

    anyone?

I've heard some very good things about Adrian Flux. They seem to be aimed at lads and hot hatches, so they look to be worth a shot.

    ;) MGT

I've had poor quotes from Adrian Flux for non-hot hatches. It sounds daft, but I can heavily recommend Tesco. Brilliant people on the phone, the service is excellent (they're always re-evaluating our policies and sending refunds as needed, yet don't bother with taking more money), and they let named drivers earn no-claims discount. i.e. Put your Mum on as main driver, add you as a named driver... :)

Always go in person through a live broker. Trust me. It saved me over $1,000 off of insuring my car over telephone or Internet quotes.

i would pay 900quid with my eyes shut. for a 1.4 clio group 1, i'd be looking at paying £3200 quid for 3rd party fire and theft, or 2400 with me as a second driver with my dad! thems the breaks living in such a blackspot!

2nd vote for Tesco, they were also very good at sorting out when my dad had a slight knock in his car. I've found their renewal quotes to be high but a quick shop around and a phone call usually sees them matching it or better.

im assuming you are young, so why not get your parents to register it?

once i finally buy a car thats what I will be doing as its almost double the price until I will be 21-22 (im 18 now)

agree 100%, I was insured on my parents car since the day I got my licence when I was 16. I had a car for about a year from 18-19 years old, and when I bought a car when I was 25 I am only paying 1000 CDN a year because I was insured the entire time. Being insured constantly will help bring the price down later in life.
And being a second driver on the car will be cheaper than being the primary driver.

i guess its different for where you live.

here you get a discount based on how many merits you have. once you have 2 then you get your full discount. and for me that will happen earlier than most everyone who gets their drivers here. here we are eligible for our learners when you are 15.5 years old if you take the driver training course. i took it at exactly 15.5 years old and took the road course at almost exactly after the 9 months were up on my learners so i got everything done within a few days of the shortest possible. so when i am about 21.5 or so i will finally get the full discount.

here we only have one place where we can insure our cars. there is no multiple companies. our car insurance company is our provincial government. some ways its very good as we have some of the lowest prices in canada but other things like motorcycles are rediculously expensive.

    Couldn't have said it better

when I get "my car" it will be under my dads name and it will be his 2nd pleasure car so I can get full comp for really cheap

    hey guys,

    Thanks for the responses.

I am actually 21 years old and putting my mother as a first driver means I cant get the no claims discount for myself. Also she doesnt have any no claims discounts as she was a second driver with my fathers policy and putting him as the first driver isnt an option as he is already insured on another car.

I will check out tesco and see what they are like!

Are there any companys that "match the lowest quote" or anything? or try to beat it?

I found Tesco were crazily expensive when I got a quote from them, I found Swift Cover to be very good.

I think which insurance provider is the best for you will vary depending on your location and circumstances, the only real way to find out is to test as many of them as possible. :)

I found Adrian Flux to be very good, everyone else was going to charge me £1200 last year, Adrian Flux trumped it with £330.

That's because you drive a BMW which to most insurers means you're obnoxious to other road users...

Anyone know the dodginess of being misleading about the address at which your car is parked overnight?

I'm trying to sort out insurance at the moment and there's a massive difference between my parents address down in London (cheap) and where I'll be living and the car will be parked most of the time.

It does invalidate your insurance as far as I'm aware - you'd also have trouble claiming if your car got broken into at night, if it's parked where you live.

£900 for 0 NCB is brilliant.
I'm currently paying £890 with 3 yrs NCB - I'm 25, and it's only a Volvo (Group 12 though, I believe, so that may have something to do with it.)

Makes me sick that my other half is insured on her car for less than £300.

ha, probably. Sadly its an out of date image that stems from when BMW's were mostly company cars. Now (around here) I find the worst are Skoda Octavias and Pug Estates or whatever the company car of the month seems to be.
The Passats are dissapearing now though.

    Anyway. This is about insurance...

Yes, as badders says it breaks the insurance which could be deemed that you are driving without insurance thus you are illegally driving your car (yes I've known people that its happened to).

Try phoning around too, some places are often more expensive online as they are generic quotes and aren't tailored for you specifically :)

I went with www.bell.co.uk for my first car. Its also worth asking for the accelerated 10month = 1 years NCB scheme some do.
