I could be wrong but if it is declared that the car is used for say 'commuting and social purposes' the social purposes section SHOULD cover the car being parked somewhere other than the registered address?

Ofcourse that said you should still be honest, but my first car is registered at my parents address (it doens't live with me 80% of the time tho as I do not have a garage to house it in ;) )
Registered the second for up here but hopefully that utter lemon will be gone in the near future haha.

I think it does not matter if your fathers insured. Try http://www.directline.com/. The best thing to do as your 21 - insure as second driver under your fathers name and they still give you no claims bonus too :) Though claims bonus is only with them!! which SUCKS but i find them to b cheap as chips.

I think the car insurance companies would realise that people would want to be covered when away from home - who buys a car just to leave it parked in their drive?!

I'm going through this dilemma at the moment. I'm moving to Derby (woo.) to start a new job next moth, and just renewed my insurance - but what address do I use? I haven't found a flat there yet, and when I do I'll probably only be in it for 6 months... So I used my parent's address (which is the only address I'm always contactable at). Curiously enough, insuring a car in Aberdeenshire seems to be £200 cheaper than in either Glasgow or Derby. Hmm.

Anyway, I suppose the sensible thing to do is to get in touch with the insurer once I've moved... though for now I'll enjoy a cheap premium.

Well I got the insurance today, it was really strange.

I tried to get a quote online and the premium said a little over £1000 with Endsleigh.

I tinkered around with it by putting my mother as the first driver on her own and it went to around £400 without me on it. Then I changed her details and put me as the first driver and her as the second (the same situation as when I got the £1000) and it went to £854.05!? I went through making sure all the details were correct and even added a third driver, my brother, and it stayed on £854.05 so i took it!

Also I did it through Quidco.com so I should save another £45 ontop making it come at just about £809 ish roughly which isnt bad!

I phoned them up asking why their system did this and she said the prices change almost constantly and I must have got lucky hitting a sweet spot....strange?

Do try Quinn dierct. I'm 26 and I insured my first car 2.0 astra sri for £650. Apparently they are one of the best for insuring young drivers. You do save money doing it online though.

    Which was nice.

I use Endsleigh, they are really good, I was on the phone to a really nice guy for like 45mins while he tinkered around trying to make my quote the cheapest!

I found Bell Insurance (a subdivision of Admiral) gave my cheapest insurance quote, once I put my mother on as a named driver (£100 cheaper with her :D ).

The best thing about them is they give you Any-Car insurance when you're under 25...

I vote for direct line. They may be pricey at first, but when you have a years no claims with them being a named driver the price is cut in half. The no claims is only with them, but when you get your own policy it is very likely that it will be cheaper with them with their no claims than with anyone else and no ncb. Also I think that after 3 years being the policy holder on direct line, those 3 years and any you gained being a named driver get turned into "real" no claims bonus.

that's called fronting and its illegal. If your main driver and you put someone else as the named driver its invalidates your insurance and anyone who drives without insurance should be taken around the back and shoot.

Its only fronting if they find out about it. And how are they going to, they can't follow you around all day, that's called harassment or stalking. The only time they will ever even check up on this is if a 45 year old man happens to be the main driver for a saxo VTS (or similar) that's lowered, has a bigger exhaust and has anything else done to it, this is providing they actually declare half the stuff.

The OP has a pretty sensible, normal everyday car there is no reason for the insurance company to see that as fronting and if his ma or pa drives the car even a small bit then really it cant even be considered fronting.

But as for having no insurance, agreed 100%.

Insurance companies regularly use private detectives to try and find out if someone's lying when they claim, i wouldn't risk having a fronted policy tbh. And to the op third party?! What happens if you run someone over and they sue you?

Doesn't change he fact your driving uninsured and that makes him a ... well you know I'am mean. If a parent uses it small its still fronting cos he would be the main driver when he's not registered as such.

Fronting is as good as having no insurance. Its up to you to prove that you're not fronting, not vice versa. If you are fronting and you can't prove otherwise then in the event of a claim your insurance is null and void.

If you put your mum on the policy as a named driver it will lower your premium as well :thumb:

not sure if this will help or not. But i know when i was looking for an insurance broker i went with the same broker as my parents for a couple of reasons.

    1. I already had a preexsisting history from when i drove my parents car.
    2. I got lots of discounts since there were 2 cars at the residence under the same broker and also dual policy. So i ended saving my self 20% on my insurance. Also age and vehicle also play a role. Right now i pay around 89 a month for

    2 mill liability
    $500 deductable
    crash proof
Rental car if my car needs repairing due to an accident

    I drive a 2003 Hyundai Elantra

As far as im aware Third Party fire and Theft includes legal cover for myself should I have an accident and its my fault - it just means they dont fix my car but instead fix the poor sods car.

Anyone able to confirm this or not just to make sure? as iv read it and thats the impression I get:

"covers your legal liability to others, for injurys to them or damage to their property, including their vehicle"

    Thats what it says..

I believe "covers your legal liability to others, for injurys to them or damage to their property, including their vehicle" is referring to your liability should you cause an accident. The legal part is referring to the fact that legally you must have it to use/own a car on the public road.

Legal cover is somewhat different in that it covers your legal costs should you need to take a claim dispute to court.

As for the price, I wish I could get insurance that cheap when I started :) It was almost £1500 I think for TPF&T on a 1.2 Clio.

Well I will be honest I did not know that, but I can't imagine they would unless it was a high value claim or the car was a bit suspect. I don't imagine they would waste their time looking into a T reg 1.4 306, and I really can't see how they can possibly prove that you are the main driver, without digging out tons of CCTV camera footage of you, and even then its no proof.

As above, it would be very hard for them to go against you if you say you aren't fronting, what proof could they dig up.

After a little research into the matter, it appears that (usually) fronting is only looked into if the main driver and the car owner are different. If he bought the car and its registered to him, then it would be hard for him to prove he wasn't fronting. But if you are going to be driving around near you own(parents) home ie not at uni, then there is really no way the insurance company can say its fronting.

Mainly I just felt like arguing my point, but I agree that its not worth the risk.

norwich union do a great thing for young drivers (and they are cheap too) you pay for 9 months insurance and if you dont claim within the 9 months you get a full years ncb so in 1.5 years you have 2 years ncb and it keeps on going on so in 3 years you have 4 years ncb :thumb:

Its a great deal but you will need to call them up to sort it out which seeing as you would like to talk to people is a good thing
