ended up buying a 106 1997 1.1, cheapest insurance i came across has been 2500! How would i go about being put on my grandads? hes insured on his own car so don't know if i could drive my own car?
Why did you buy before checking the insurance?! (I'm assuming that's what you've done) Surely a 1.4 206 was the best bet since you got a quote of £1300. Using someone else as the primary driver when they're not is a) fraud and b) useless when you want to earn no-claims most of the time, occasionally named drivers will earn their own no-claims, but usually only when taking a policy out with the same company.
Because you'd think a 1.1 would be cheaper then a newer 1.4! and of course he'll be using the car most of the time, I'll just use it for trips here and their as i live at work and generally just use the car for taking ma girl friend out. So i wont be able to earn no-claims if i go on someone policy? fml
Didn't you have a motorbike? Direct line honoured my no claims from driving my bike and my insurance plummeted. Maybe worth a try. Also try some insurance brokers they can often get better prices. Check for tp, tpft and fully comprehensive. Sometimes fully comprehensive is cheaper or a couple of quid more.
You would think so, but clearly their stats say that a 1.1 106 is a bigger risk for you. If he is genuinely using it more than you do, that'll be fine, but be prepared for a dispute if you have an accident. dancingbear makes a great point - get onto your bike insurer and see if you can transfer the no-claims across, there are a few others that will honour it as well, and it'll drop your premium quite a bit to have some no-claims.
Which is an annoying point, girlfriend owns the mini, but i drive it 99% of the time but try and find an insurer that will allow; owner and keeper of the car in a different name to the main policy holder.
Why not transfer the reg'd keeper to your name? Didn't realise that was a sticking point with insurance, I've always glanced over that question without really thinking about it!
Directline weren't able to even give me a quote over the phone I think i'm going to have to go with Adrian flux for 1.8 or see how it goes with my Granddads, dad wont let me touch either of his two 10 year no claims
Having a different owner is fine as long as you are the main driver. If she owns the car and is the primary driver on the policy but you are driving it 99% of the time this is insurance fronting. If she owns it but you are the primary driver on the policy, this is usually fine, at least it has been in my experience. I owned the car for various financial reasons the gf was policy holder. I have never had an issue.
Look out for one of those policies that allow the named driver to gain NCB too, can't remember which insurers offer this but I'm sure someone will. Lifesaver for young drivers.
Finally insured for a breath taking 2200 of the Queens finest notes. Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
Decided to get a quote for my girlfriend on my Audi S3 - cheapest quote for her £3,300!!! (Tesco), as my renewal is due I decided to see what they would quote me - £770 which is over £100 more than they quoted me last year and I have Full NCD.
When people are getting these mad quotes and saying 'cheapest quote is...' are you just using price comparison websites? Because they're crap for insurance and not worth using. Example...... My cheapest quotes on price comparison sites: Tesco=£1,400 Ringing round: Tesco=£800 (nearly half the price with a phone call) Hastings Direct=£500 QuotemeHappy=£340 =£120 quidco cashback at the time, my insurance went from £1400 according to the internet, to £220 for the sake of actually talking to people. Just call! Similarly, just re-did my home insurance.... Confused.com cheapest quote = £210 Endsleigh website = £120 Endsleigh phone call = £100 +quidco of £20. Even when you click a quote and go through to the insurers own site you'll often get a much higher quote than if you individually go to that same website and enter the same details yourself! (Yes you can get quidco for instore and phone deals, you just raise a claim and provide he details).
best thing i found to insure are car derived vans, got quoted around 650 for an escort van and im 23!
While transferring would probably be easy solution, it feels a bit unfair having just bought a newly built mini, to transfer into someone elses name, legally no longer owning the car. I'd have no problem giving it back were the situation to change, but it's more the feeling that technically she would not own it. Worked out in the end got a couple of insurers to bat off each other to a lower price, £419 for both on a 1L Mini with her having an accident last year, I just got made to feel like I was possibly illegally fronting the insurance when I explained the situation! This. Sure use a price comparison website as a ballpark, just remember the ball landed outside of it! Give all the insurers a ring, then get the 2nd lowest Insurer to lower or better their offer of the lowest offer! On the kit car I went from a quote of £800 to £350 (last year) to £280 this year, and the mini went from a quote of £900! to £550(last year) and now £419 this year.
Sadly, I'm of the age now where it doesn't seem to make sense any more. I pay £200 a year for a 180 horsepower 2.2 diesel fully comp, but it would have cost me £600 if I had chosen a 130 horsepower warm hatch
My car insurance halved when I moved to Surbiton. I was originally quoted over £400 for my 1.8 Vectra. Esure quoted me £230 when I told them I have moved....
Ugh, Elephant have just quoted £400 extra for a change of address, have to drive my car back down as I'm not going to pay that. I tired to get a quote beforehand but had trouble with their stupid email system.
