I need some help picking a subwoofer for my truck. I already have an amp its an Infinity REference 310a it does 310 watts at 2 ohms and 116 at 4 ohms. Originally i wanted to use a rockford 8" punch stage 2 but its 4 ohms and 150 watts which from my reading is to much of a stretch for the amp. I just found this mtx thunder which is 100 watts but that would mean the amp is putting an extra 16 watts all the time. All the information i read says its bad to have to powerful of an amp. I dont want the speaker to sound like shat i just want some mild base so i can feel my music more.
pretty positive it's a non-issue to underdrive a speaker/subwoofer... so getting the 150W sub shouldn't be a problem for the 116W amp
I listen to mostly hard rock that has some bass to it. I can buy a seperate amp controler but would that change wattage to speaker or just input volume. I agree with most though that taking the volume down would be the same as lowering power to the speaker so you would in theory be underpowering it. THis is why I asked before i leaped because all over the internet it says yes it is bad, no that person is wrong its ok, no its ok, no its fine, no its ok, STOP IT ALREADY PEOPLE. I guess sometimes the internet is a godsend and sometimes its some hellish form of torture. Im going to wait for my next paycheck to get the sub anyways so ill look some more into it.
If you just want it for the bass in metal get some quality 6*9 will much better quality for your money and will give decent bass
I have some good quality door speakers which give alot of bass, but if you still want a sub I would day that the equipment you have should be ok. Also depends how much room you want to use? With sealed/ported cases as ported are usually larger than sealed.
Agreed. 6x9's just give volume, even the reasonable ones (and the set I have a pretty good, they just added mid to my setup). General rule of thumb though is if its "kicky" music, a 10" sub will be fine, if you want more of a drone type bass (usually dance) a 12" is better, I however use a 12" as it works pretty well for both, and it's nice to have the option. It's really all dependant on what type of setup you want, how much space, and how much money you have. If all else fails if you have mates who have subs see if they can let you test it in your car first, you'll get a better idea of what to expect that way.
10" sub will give a tighter bass more suited to dance music. 12" will give a more boomy sound suited to rock. If you get a decent sent of 6x9's or 7x10's you will be surprised how they sound but a sub always helps. Dont worry about the sub stretching the amp it would be fine
