Im 16, and after i graduate High School i want to go to college and have a career in computers. My favorite subject is security and networks. I would also like to own my own bussiness. I am not sure about the certs and what classes to take in college.

I just need some help figuring out what career in computers i want to do. Another thing is i like helping people and talking with them. I dont want to be in a room by myself all day, hunched over a PC looking at IDS. I was thinking about IT manager but that seems like you have to be very intelligent and have years and years of experience.

I have a B average at school. So can someone help me find a career path? and i would like a job that pays well could someone give me some salary examples of maybe what you guys make?

    thanks,
    Zach

My advice would be start at the bottom and work your way up getting certs as you need them. Be prepeared to spend a few years in tekmonkey hell doing crap jobs and dealing with people who have no knowledge.

I agree. More times than not, in this field you need to cut your teeth as a helpdesk drone, only then can you advance..

Anyone can work helpdesk - that is why a lot of people start there.

It is the few that can prove themselves at that level and above that advance.

i agree with penski, ive spoken to people that are really good in their field, they have got loads of experience and qualifications and are really interesting to talk to you. You ask them how they got into this area and got all of their experience expecting them to say that they just walked straight into it out of university and gained all the experience they needed quickly and easily but in reality most of them worked their way up the ranks of help desk's.
