This is the way the cash for clunkers scheme says engines must be destroyed, and failure to do so will incur a $15,000 fine! It seems stupidly wasteful for a scheme that's supposed to help the environment. Does anyone know how the UK scheme works in regard to disposing of the cars? I really hope its not like this. Maybe I'm just an overly sappy car lover (I have to name all my vehicles), but watching the video actually hurt me, the car is screaming in pain you have been warned.
As far as I know in this country they just go straight into a crusher. I don't know why someone would scrap that Volvo - it looks pretty new and in decent condition... Some people are just mad!
I'm guessing that was just a car they used to demo the process, I was also surprised at how long it ran with essentially negative lubricant, poor thing ;(
It looks like they just filmed one of the many they were doing that day - there're a big line of cars all with the bonnets propped open, more victims? Not particularly nice to see a car die, least of all a half-decent one.
A good point, in which case I'm guessing they just did it for the $2000 (or whatever it is in USA) which just proves how flawed the scheme is, people will destroy perfectly good cars for a couple of grand off a new one. What's even worse is in the UK, and it's probably the same anywhere else, the scrappage scheme is not available in conjunction with any other offer, meaning the £2000 you get off your new car could have been had as discount just for asking, and no cars would have had to die.
One, destoying the engine in that means is retarded, and two, why a volvo! (im a hardcore volvo fan) It would been better to strip the vechicles down for usable parts, and recycle the rest, those engines in the S80 run pretty clean and newer cars aint that much better. Alot of american pickups there, so i'll happily see them die, but not a volvo, i want to find the person that traded that in and slap them!
Tearing them out for parts, melting them down, re-using, etc, would be so much more beneficial than this crap..
What a waste - and would a better scheme - given the extreme poverty in many parts of the US, be to pay $2000 for the older cars, and the ones that pass a basic emissions test (might not be many but i'll hazzard that volvo would have done!) be given to those less fortunate? RwD
The really sad thing is that the engine in the volvo, was probably 5 times more economical than what ever it was traded in against
The retarded thing in the UK is that to trade in a car under the scheme, it has to have an MOT!! Ridiculous. Far better to sell it TBH. I think a lot of car companies are also increasing the prices of their cars, assuming that people will "take advantage" of the discount, thus reducing the car cost to what it would have been anyway. The money should run out soon anyway, so all is not lost.
If they exported the cars to 3rd world countries, it would get alot of vechicals that are poluting off the roads, especially if they were pratically given away! You wouldn't believe it, being an S80 and the fact it wasn't a turbo model my guess at the moment is the 2.4 litre 5 cylinder model, enough torque to sit at motorway speed and idle almost, knowing the moron that traded it in, they now have a smaller engine which is getting trashed in comprassion to the volvo. Makes me sick!! it shouldn't be for cars older than 10years, it should be older the 15years as the amount of cars over here that age is alot higher than you might expect.
because the cylinders would lock up first before the crank and cam bearings get F**Ked, its a harsh but solid way to total an engine.
I'm guessing that's because the scheme is to get old, polluting cars off the road, and if it can't pass an MOT then it's already off the road. +1 on the giving the cars away to third world/low income people. My car would qualify for the scheme, and she's definitely got a good few years left in her, no way I'd consider scrapping a car that still has life left in it, it's just cruel.
I have just traded in my old ford escort 20 year old, yes the engine is good for another40/50000 miles but the chassis was crumbling to dust and it would have cost at least £400 to fix, to get it through the next MOT I would not like to see that one sent to the 3rd or any other world. and FYI all cars on the UK scrappage are Definately Crushed, and have to be certified so.
That could take a lot longer, and it may just turn itself off, but still work. It's like when you get a BSOD for temp's, it doesn't destroy the computer.
You's be surprised how hard it is to kill an engine. Cut the coolant, worst that can happen is blow out the head gasket, meaning a simple repair, maybe re-surfacing of the head and block
This right here is just plain retarded. It's always a shame when something perfectly functional is ruined on purpose. This falls in the same category with government computers getting trashed, when there are plenty of schools and libraries that could do with the used computers. I kinda see how it makes sense to keep sensitive files safe, and to make sure the old computers don't make profit/don't get sold too cheap/what ever, but it still seems stupid.
