You're gonna laugh at my utter stupidity.... :duh:

Basically I was doing some mod-lite work to my mobo, sticking some microsinks on the MOSFET chips to keep 'em cooler whilst overclocking the tits off the CPU and a new northbridge HSF combo. I thought....what the hell, whilst I'm at it I'll glue on a sizeable heatsink to the southbridge too. Of course all these sinks where permenantly stuck to their respect chips using Aritc Alumina Adhensive because it's non-conductive ('cept for the northbridge HSF). Anyway, once the adhesive cured on all the sinks I started to re-assemble my PC....only to find that the new southbridge heatsink's massive fins block my graphics card from going into the AGP slot!!! :wallbash:

Oh bugger....I think, realizing that I now cannot remove the permenantly attached southbridge heatsink. So some quick (stupid) thinking; a hack-saw blade, a metal-file, a large can of air-duster, 2 plastic shopping bags (to cover the entire mobo except the offending heatsink), and a heck of lot of masking tape, I go about surgically removing some of the heatsink's fins whilst it's attached to the mobo. Yes, I know, pretty mad huh? But I did go into doing this knowing there was a very good chance of buggering the mobo completely.

Anyway a few finger blisters later of hack-sawing and filing the deed is done, the offending fins have been removed. A lot of blasts with the air-duster (to remove any metal filings), the plastic bags and tape was removed. More and more blasts with the air-duster to be absolutely sure there where no tiny metal filings anyway on the mobo, I held my breath and re-assembled my PC.

Well, once it was all back together I turned on the PC and....no POST beep. Oh bugger again! :wallbash: Checked the BIOS chip hadn't unseated itself (as Chaintech mobo BIOS chips can)....turned it on, no POST beep! Oh double bugger!! :wallbash: :wallbash: Flashed the CMOS (more than once)!! Still no POST beeps!! F**k, s**t, w**k and other colorful expletives!!! :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I think I have killed my mobo!! :waah:

I have either ragged the southbridge with my hack-sawing, crushed the northbridge accidentally, a stray metal filling has shorted something, or all three. Also the air-duster wasn't my normal brand choice (which is Servisol), but a cheap brand that expelled a freezing cold liquid every now and then instead of pressurized air whilst I was blast away zealously with it over the entire mobo. Maybe the freezing liquid has caused some damage to the mobo too?

What do you think, an expensive coaster/dead mobo or is it there a glimmer of hope of it still being resurrectable? :sigh:

well if you had a filing it would have sparked. if you crushed something the computer would have still done something. I would try to reseat everything. maybe jiggle the atx connector. That happened to me once that my atx was connected but the comp would not turn on but jiggling the connector proved to solve it. Hope this helps

you know how it goes; measure twice, epoxy a heatsink on once :p

Before doing anything, put all the parts as they're going to be, see if everything is ok and then do the job.
I think you've learnt the lesson.

I would unplug everything, just start the mobo, then put the CPU, then RAM, then vid card, then hdd, etc.

Next time you glue something with thermal adhesive to your MOBO and need it off. try popping it in the freezer overnight and try a little wiggling in the morning, iv heard of success stories about that.

And RotoSequence thatd be a pretty damaging coaster... kinda like counter productive?

I killed my mobo with static.

Yes, :duh: I do realize now what a complete f**kwit of a mistake I made using plastic bags!! :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

When you panic sometimes you just don't think straight. Now I wish I had heeded something my dad always told me...."Make haste slowly". :duh: Maybe then I might have slowed down enough to remember plastic bags make static and used anti-static bags instead. :sigh:

Does this mean my CPU's dead too? It was still on the mobo because....yes, I was too impatient to remove the cumbersome heatsink.

Hey never hurts to try just try the cpu in another board. Did you also have your ram in cause if you did that might be gone aswell. As someone in this great world said one time haist makes waist.
