Hi guys. I'm repairing a computer -- the customer reports that the cd drive does not recognize when a new disc is inserted. It seems to know when there ISN'T a disk in, especially if I eject it, but when I access it, it still finds the old directory structure. Reminds me of when I don't unmount a drive in linux. It's windows XP, so I can't check/uncheck the Auto Insert Notification (or whatever). Suggestions?
hiya - i presume that you have checked all the cables are secure but have you tried uninstalling the drive from the hardware manager console? i had a similar prob before and reinstalling seemed to cure the prob for a while but reinstalling nvidia (ide) chipset totally cured it. failing that try a new cable or its time for a new drive? anyone else?
You can check if autorun is enabled in the registry. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\ You should see a "AutoRun" entry with a value of "1" You could also try the Microsoft Autoplay Repair Wizard
Did you try F5 to refresh the explorer file list? I don't think changing autorun and insert notification will help you get anywhere. Rather do as superseagull suggests and try updating drivers and un/re-installing the drive itself from Device Manager. I have tried what you describe quite a few times where Windows wouldn't refresh contents automatically but F5 has always helped.
Thanks guys. But, not autorun and refresh with f5 are not the issue. Windows doesn't know if a new disk has been inserted (nor does it check when asked.) We've unistalled and reinstalled the drive both in the device manager and physically as well. We've also swapped physical drives as well. Now we're running a repair installation of windows xp sp1, and it's complaining about a couple of the dlls, none of which seem even remotely related to CD drives. Any thoughts? I really don't wanna hafta reformat a customer's drive, it'll cost buckets.
Make sure to update all the way up to SP3 after the repair. And slipstream yourself a SP3 repair disc If you don't wish to format/reinstall XP, you could always pop in a cheap small drive ad install into that. Then the customers data will be safe on the old hdd so he can sort it himself.
Ha. So we got it to work with our SP1 disk, then installed SP2 with a thumb disk. Now . . . we're back to where we started. Sigh.
try this: open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMCurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot. There may be more than one {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - do it for each. you may need to install / update cd-rw software after.
