My niece is having problems with her CD-R/DVD combo drive and I went to check it out, it was acting pretty whack...

It will not read a CD and sometimes the drive name changes automatically from CD-R/DVD to just CD-R and I have no idea what the problem was, I would assume it is still working considering that if I right click on the icon and hit eject it still follows, when I put in a CD it takes a few seconds to read then shows up as blank on the folder. The drivers havnt been updated and it used to work until one day it stopped working. I would assume the reader is damaged or what? Please help me out :]

swap the cable and check the jumpers before jumping to any conclusions - and make sure that dma is enabled in the device mgr/ide controllers section.

also, if it's a prebuild machine, make sure that the cd/dvd isnt on the same cable as the hdd - my brother's e-machine had loads of issues till i set them on seperate channels.
