Hi, Ive just put a window in my CD Writer, and must say it looks nice and smooth, what ya think. One tip i have to offer is I found the the dremel is quite time consuming and difficult, I used a jig saw with a super fine blade in, and it zipped though it and as long its held down well to a solid surface it will come out nice. One question though i need answering is, I will put in some nice coloured LED but I want to know will the light from the LEds interfere with the burn process??? Rusty
I always wanted to know that too. I was thinking about lots of lights in my new one. In my TDK I replaced the burn indicating led with a very bright white LED and it lit the front tray when writing, but not entirely. I wanted to do this on a grander scale this time but, I was afraid also this would interfere with the burn process also.
errr, im on 56k now, so im limited to having my pics hosted on a free site, pics gotta be under 80k, which sucks ****... heres the link if you want www.cedarcountyia.com/imagehost.htm dez
Hi, heres the picture of my mod, what you think??? Now back to the question, when i get round to putting some LEDs in side to light it up, will the extra light effect the burn process?????????????????? Rusty
That looks well cool As for the lights not sure about them interfering... bearing in mind you will be mounting the lights above the disk? So I'm not sure, if you do mount them just point them away from the Laser as much as possible! I shouldn't think that light affects the burn process, after all if light did damage the process/disc, then surely CD-R's would need to be handled like undeveloped 35mm camera film???
It's not the CDs that are light sensitive. As you probably know there are pits in a CD which reflect laser light. There is a light sensor below the CD which catches the reflected light. It falls in different places depending on if the laser is pointing at a pit or one of the raised bits (forget what they're called). Sooo depending on how the light sensor works it may or may not be affected by external light. I'd say try it and see .
Fair enough, but I'm pretty sure that the sensors are set up only to read the laser light? Because there are loads of stereo's ETC available where the whole CD area is exposed to light due to a window! But there will be a CD in the way, it would be stupid to shine the light directly into the sensor yes. but if the LED's are at the top I see no problem...?
Let me see if I can help shed some light on this. The laser works in a band other than the visible light spectrum, also take into sonsideration the very focused, monochromatic nature of laser light, and I belive that you will be fine. I *think* that the laser will be relativly imune to light pollution other than something in the infrared band. If I wasn't so lasy, I could get my optics notes and tell you what the specific wavelenghts that may be used are. With that said, I certainly hope it doesn't interfere because I'm trying to get my hands on some clear resin and molding supplies to makea clear, light up CD tray (and anything else I can manage to do in there as well). I hope to have my homework done on this project and have somthing to post in a couple weeks.
