Hi, After some more Linux advice (I will probs be posting 1 a week after my lectures as Linux is confusing me a lot tbh, so bare with me and thank you all so much for the help!) I need to configure xinetd, from my understanding you configure each service as a new file within the directory /etc/xinetd.d/ I have configured one for ftp, following the example given for telnet (both below) and have changed the configuration on echo-stream (also below) and restarted the service, but service is still failing to work, could I get some pointers in what I have mis-configured Echo-Stream: Code: # This is the configuration for the tcp/stream echo service. service echo { # This is for quick on or off of the service ############################################## #Only thing edited in this file ############################################### disable = no # The next attributes are mandatory for all services id = echo-stream type = INTERNAL wait = no socket_type = stream # protocol = socket type is usually enough # External services must fill out the following # user = # group = # server = # server_args = # External services not listed in /etc/services must fill out the next one # port = # RPC based services must fill out these # rpc_version = # rpc_number = # Logging options # log_type = # log_on_success = # log_on_failure = # Networking options # flags = # bind = # redirect = # v6only = # Access restrictions # only_from = # no_access = # access_times = # cps = 50 10 # instances = UNLIMITED # per_source = UNLIMITED # max_load = 0 # deny_time = 120 # mdns = yes # Environmental options # env = # passenv = # nice = 0 # umask = 022 # groups = yes # rlimit_as = # rlimit_cpu = # rlimit_data = # rlimit_rss = # rlimit_stack = # Banner options. (Banners aren't normally used) # banner = # banner_success = # banner_fail = } Telnet: Code: GNU nano 2.0.9 File: telnet # default: on # description: The telnet server serves telnet sessions; it uses \ # unencrypted username/password pairs for authentication. service telnet { flags = REUSE socket_type = stream wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/in.telnetd log_on_failure += USERID disable = no } VSFTPD: Code: GNU nano 2.0.9 File: vsftpd # default: on # description: The telnet server serves telnet sessions; it uses \ # unencrypted username/password pairs for authentication. service vsftpd { flags = REUSE socket_type = stream wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/vsftpd log_on_failure += USERID disable = no } Thank you all soo much for your help And yes I know telnet is insecure but what uni wants it will get DT.
I apologize but why do you push it through xinetd ? VSFPTD has a separate service (/etc/init.d/vsftpd). Maybe the Arch linux guide will help ? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Very_Secure_FTP_Daemon#Using_xinetd
in the past when I have had xinetd configured correctly, I have not been able to work until I have done the following: killall -SIGHUP xinetd service xinetd restart my service file looks like: Code: service livestatus { type = UNLISTED port = 6557 socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no cps = 100 3 instances = 500 per_source = 250 flags = NODELAY user = icinga server = /usr/bin/unixcat server_args = /usr/local/icinga/var/rw/live #below configure the IP address of the central icinga server only_from = ****IP OF CENTRAL SERVER**** disable = no } (my file is from a debian build though not redhat/centos) Are you not needing to specify a port at all?
