I'm planning on getting an Enermax Liberty 500W and was wondering if it is possible to change the usual ON/OFF - switch at the back. I would prefer something like

The led is not a problem, but I can't figure out if the original switch is connected to the full 230VAC (or 115VAC). Looking at an old Enermax 300W psu the switch is indeed rated 250VAC. Is that just a safety precaution or a surefire sign of imminent failure?
If I can't use the new switch directly, is there a simple way to bypass the original switch with a relay?

The switch at the back switches 230V mains. You can't use a relay without another power supply to power the relay :)

Any mains raited switch (for your location...) with enough amperage capacity will be fine to replace it with.

I'm just curious - how come you want to replace that switch?

I want to put the switch about 5cm behind the psu. I was originally planning to put it next to some other buttons that control lights etc. Therefore I wanted them to be similar but now I'll have to come up with a back-up plan.

PSU switches are a damn nuisance; last time I had my case open I accidentally turned it off, then couldn't understand why the system wouldn't boot...

I replaced the switch with one of these illuminated switches. I kept knocking the power off by accident when doing something with cables behind my NAS server.

Sounds good enough. I'll get something like that then. Thanks for the help.

You could remove the switch from the system however, if it would be more convienient. The ATX12v 2.2 spec says that it may be ommited since the mains connector can be used as an equipment disconnect.

That's an interesting idea actually. No more guessing whether the switch is on or not. Thanks for the tip.
